Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park
After breakfast, your guide will collect you from the hotel and drive to Tarangire National Park.
Tarangire is known for its ancient baobab trees, varied landscapes and large elephant population. During the dry season, animals gather around the Tarangire River, which serves as an important water source.
Your game drive may reveal elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, impalas, waterbucks, buffaloes and warthogs. Lions, leopards and cheetahs are also present, although sightings depend on their movements.
You will enjoy lunch inside or near the park before continuing the afternoon game drive. Later, you will travel to your lodge or tented camp for dinner and an overnight stay.
Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp near Tarangire or Karatu
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 3: Tarangire to Central Serengeti
After breakfast, you will travel toward Serengeti National Park, passing through the scenic Ngorongoro highlands.
The journey provides beautiful views of rural villages, farmland and the expansive plains leading toward the Serengeti. After completing the park-entry procedures, you will begin your first Serengeti game drive.
The Central Serengeti, also called the Seronera region, has permanent water sources and supports wildlife throughout the year. It is one of the best areas for observing lions, leopards, cheetahs and spotted hyenas.
You will continue to your lodge or tented camp before sunset.
Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in Central Serengeti
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 4: Full-Day Game Drive in Central Serengeti
Today is dedicated to exploring the Central Serengeti. An early start provides a good opportunity to observe predators before temperatures rise.
The Seronera Valley contains rivers, acacia woodland, rocky kopjes and open grasslands. These habitats support elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, antelopes and numerous bird species.
Your guide will search for leopards resting in trees, lions near the kopjes and cheetahs scanning the plains. You may return to the camp for lunch or carry a picnic lunch for a continuous full-day game drive.
The flexible schedule makes this 12 Days Serengeti Migration Safari especially suitable for wildlife photographers and travelers who prefer unhurried observation.
Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in Central Serengeti
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 5: Central Serengeti to the Seasonal Migration Region
After breakfast, you will travel to the part of the Serengeti where the migration is expected during your visit.
From approximately December to March, the herds are generally found around the Southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains. Between April and June, they often move through the central and western areas. From July to October, many herds reach Northern Serengeti and the Mara River region.
These movements are natural and cannot be guaranteed for an exact place or date. Your guide will use recent wildlife information to improve your chances of finding the migrating herds.
A game drive will be conducted along the way before you arrive at your seasonal camp or lodge.
Accommodation: Seasonal migration camp or lodge
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 6: Full-Day Great Migration Safari
You will spend the day tracking wildebeest, zebras and gazelles across the plains. The migration attracts predators, including lions, cheetahs, leopards and hyenas, creating an active wildlife environment.
During the calving season, thousands of wildebeest calves may be born across the southern plains. This period can attract predators searching for vulnerable animals.
During the river-crossing season, the herds may gather near the Mara River before attempting to cross. A crossing can happen without warning, and waiting may take several hours or even days. No responsible operator can guarantee a crossing on a specific day.
Your guide will select the most promising viewing areas while respecting wildlife and national park regulations.
Accommodation: Seasonal migration camp or lodge
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 7: Second Full Day in the Migration Area
A second full day in the migration region improves your chances of observing significant herd activity.
Instead of rushing between different locations, you can spend time watching animal behavior and waiting for photographic opportunities. Your guide may explore grasslands, river valleys, rocky outcrops or woodland areas depending on the season.
Although wildebeest are the main focus, you may also encounter elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, hippos and many bird species.
An optional hot-air-balloon safari may be arranged in advance at an additional cost. Learn more about Hot Air Balloon Flights.
Accommodation: Seasonal migration camp or lodge
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 8: Third Full Day Following the Migration
Your 12 Days Serengeti Migration Safari continues with another full day of wildlife exploration.
Wild animals move continuously, so each game drive can offer a different experience. Your guide will check recent information from the surrounding area and adjust the route accordingly.
You may witness large herds moving across the plains, predators following the migration or smaller groups gathering near water sources. During quieter periods, you can concentrate on photography, birdwatching and observing individual animal behavior.
In the evening, return to the camp for dinner and relaxation.
Accommodation: Seasonal migration camp or lodge
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 9: Migration Region to Central or Southern Serengeti
After breakfast, you will begin traveling toward Central or Southern Serengeti, depending on the season and your accommodation arrangement.
The journey is completed as a game drive, allowing you to continue searching for wildlife. You may encounter lions resting near rocky kopjes, giraffes moving through acacia woodland and elephants crossing the open plains.
Your guide will stop when interesting sightings occur and choose a suitable place for your picnic lunch.
You will reach your lodge or tented camp later in the day.
Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in the Serengeti
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 10: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Begin the day with a final morning game drive in the Serengeti. Morning hours can be productive for finding predators and observing animals before the temperature increases.
After lunch, you will drive toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The scenery gradually changes from the Serengeti plains to the green Ngorongoro highlands.
An optional Maasai Village visit can be arranged at an additional cost. The visit offers an introduction to Maasai traditions, livestock keeping and community life.
You will continue to your lodge or camp near the crater.
Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp near Ngorongoro
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 11: Ngorongoro Crater Safari
After an early breakfast, you will descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for an extensive game drive.
The crater floor contains grasslands, woodland, wetlands and a seasonal lake. Its permanent water and grazing areas support a high concentration of wildlife.
You may see lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, gazelles and spotted hyenas. The Ngorongoro Crater is also one of Tanzania’s important areas for searching for the endangered black rhinoceros. However, sightings are not guaranteed.
After a picnic lunch at an authorized location, you will continue exploring the crater before ascending to the rim. You will then travel to your accommodation in Karatu.
Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in Karatu
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 12: Lake Manyara National Park and Return to Arusha
After breakfast, travel to Lake Manyara National Park for the final game drive of your safari.
The park lies beneath the Great Rift Valley escarpment and contains groundwater forest, acacia woodland, wetlands and open areas near the lake. Wildlife may include elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, hippos, baboons and blue monkeys.
Lake Manyara is also associated with tree-climbing lions, but finding them depends on their location and behavior. Birdlife is diverse, while flamingo numbers change according to seasonal water and feeding conditions.
After lunch, you will return to Arusha or continue to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight. A post-safari hotel night can be arranged if required.
Accommodation: Not included unless requested
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
Understanding the Great Wildebeest Migration
The Great Migration is a continuous natural movement rather than an event that happens in one location. Rainfall and fresh grazing determine where the herds travel.
December to March: Calving Season
Large herds are generally found on the Southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains. Wildebeest give birth during this period, creating excellent opportunities to observe young animals and predator activity.
April to May: Herds Begin Moving North
As the southern grasslands become drier, wildebeest and zebras generally move through the central Serengeti. The landscape is often green, and visitor numbers may be lower.
June: Western Serengeti
Many herds move toward the Western Corridor and Grumeti region. River crossings may occur, but their timing depends on rainfall and herd movement.
July to October: Northern Serengeti
Many travelers visit during this period hoping to witness Mara River crossings. The herds may cross between Tanzania and Kenya several times, but a crossing is never guaranteed.
November: Return Toward the South
Seasonal rains encourage the herds to begin moving south through the eastern or central Serengeti. Their route can change from year to year.
