Top 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Rongai Route 2027, 2028 & 2029

Explore Tours

The Top 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Rongai Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 approaches Africa’s highest mountain from the quieter northern side, close to the Tanzania–Kenya border. Rongai is the only established Kilimanjaro route beginning on the mountain’s northern slopes.

The trail climbs through cultivated land, forest, heath, moorland and alpine desert before reaching Kibo Hut. It offers beautiful views of Mawenzi, Kibo and the open plains extending towards Kenya.

Compared with the longer seven-day version, this six-day itinerary has less time for acclimatisation. It is therefore best suited to physically prepared trekkers who understand the effects of rapid altitude gain. Travellers who prefer a slower pace should consider adding an extra day.

The summit attempt begins from Kibo Hut and climbs towards Gilman’s Point before continuing to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. The descent follows the Marangu Route through Horombo Hut and the rainforest to Marangu Gate.

Gowitos Safaris & Holidays organises the expedition with licensed mountain guides, professional cooks, experienced porters, camping equipment, meals and safety support.

6 Days Kilimanjaro Rongai Route Overview

The 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Rongai Route begins after a road transfer to Rongai Gate. The first day follows a gradual forest trail to Simba Camp.

The route continues through Second Cave towards Kikelewa Camp before climbing beneath the rugged peaks of Mawenzi. You will then cross the high-altitude Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo Hut.

The summit attempt normally begins around midnight. Climbers ascend through steep volcanic scree to Gilman’s Point and continue around the crater rim towards Uhuru Peak.

After the summit attempt, the route descends to Horombo Hut. The final day follows the Marangu trail through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate.

Detailed 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Rongai Route Itinerary

Day 1: Moshi or Arusha to Rongai Gate and Simba Camp

Your Top 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Rongai Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 begins after breakfast at your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

A representative from Gowitos Safaris & Holidays will collect you and drive around Mount Kilimanjaro towards Rongai Gate. The transfer takes longer than journeys to most other Kilimanjaro gates because Rongai is situated on the mountain’s northern side.

The drive passes through local communities, farmland and the Kilimanjaro region before reaching the gate. Your guide will complete the required park registration and entrance procedures.

The mountain crew will organise food, camping equipment and porter loads while you prepare your daypack.

The trek begins through cultivated land before entering the forest. The trail rises gradually, providing a comfortable introduction to the mountain.

The northern forest may be less dense than the rainforest found on Kilimanjaro’s southern slopes. Depending on weather and timing, you may see or hear monkeys and different forest birds.

After approximately three to four hours, you will reach Simba Camp near the edge of the moorland zone. When the sky is clear, the camp may offer views towards the Kenyan plains.

Dinner will be served, followed by the first routine health assessment and a briefing for the next day.

Starting elevation: Approximately 1,950 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 2,625 metres
Walking time: Approximately 3–4 hours
Habitat: Cultivated land and forest
Accommodation: Simba Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 2: Simba Camp via Second Cave to Kikelewa Camp

After breakfast, the 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Rongai Route continues through heath and moorland.

The landscape becomes increasingly open as the trail climbs. When weather conditions are clear, you may enjoy views of Kibo ahead and the Kenyan plains behind you.

The route passes Second Cave at approximately 3,450 metres. Depending on the group’s progress, you may stop here for lunch or a short rest.

Unlike the seven-day Rongai itinerary, the six-day programme does not normally spend the night at Second Cave. You will turn southeast and continue towards Kikelewa Camp.

The trail crosses open moorland and several valleys. Mawenzi’s jagged peaks become increasingly prominent as you approach the campsite.

The day includes a considerable elevation gain. You should walk slowly, drink water regularly and report any headache, nausea, dizziness or unusual tiredness.

You will reach Kikelewa Camp during the afternoon. The campsite is located in a sheltered valley near the Kikelewa Caves.

After arrival, you will rest while the crew prepares dinner. Your guide will conduct the daily health assessment and explain the next stage towards Mawenzi Tarn.

Starting elevation: Approximately 2,625 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,600 metres
Walking time: Approximately 6–8 hours
Habitat: Heath and moorland
Accommodation: Kikelewa Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

The third day of your Top 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Rongai Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 leads towards Mawenzi Tarn.

After breakfast, you will leave Kikelewa Camp and begin a steeper climb through increasingly rocky terrain.

The walking distance is relatively short, but the elevation gain makes the day physically demanding. Your guide will establish a slow pace and schedule breaks when necessary.

Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you enter the alpine environment. Mawenzi’s rugged cliffs rise dramatically above the trail.

Mawenzi Tarn Camp is situated in a hollow beneath the eastern side of Mawenzi. The small mountain tarn and surrounding rock formations create one of the most impressive campsite settings on Kilimanjaro.

After reaching camp, you will have lunch and rest. Depending on your health, weather and available time, your guide may lead a short acclimatisation walk during the afternoon.

This walk allows your body to experience a slightly higher elevation before returning to camp.

Temperatures can fall below freezing during the night. A suitable sleeping bag and warm clothing are essential.

Starting elevation: Approximately 3,600 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 4,330 metres
Walking time: Approximately 4–5 hours
Habitat: Moorland and alpine desert
Accommodation: Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut

After breakfast, you will leave Mawenzi Tarn and cross the broad high-altitude Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo.

The landscape is dry, open and exposed. Vegetation becomes extremely limited, and the terrain provides a clear view of the two volcanic cones when clouds permit.

Kibo rises ahead, while the jagged peaks of Mawenzi remain behind you. The open landscape may appear gentle, but the high altitude makes every step require more effort.

Cold wind and intense sunlight are both possible. Keep warm layers, waterproof clothing, sunscreen and sunglasses in your daypack.

Your guide will maintain a slow pace to conserve energy for the summit attempt.

After approximately five to seven hours, you will reach Kibo Hut at around 4,703 metres. Kibo Hut is a basic stone structure used by climbers from the Rongai and Marangu routes.

You will have an early meal and prepare your summit equipment. Your guide will explain the route, expected weather, clothing requirements and safety procedures.

Organise your headlamp, batteries, water, snacks, gloves and warm layers before resting. The summit attempt usually begins around midnight.

Starting elevation: Approximately 4,330 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 4,703 metres
Walking time: Approximately 5–7 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Accommodation: Kibo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and early dinner

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Horombo Hut

Summit day is the longest and most demanding part of the 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Rongai Route.

You will wake shortly before midnight, dress in your summit clothing and have a light meal or hot drink.

The ascent begins in darkness using headlamps. Your guide will set a slow and controlled pace over steep volcanic scree.

The route passes Hans Meyer Cave before continuing towards Gilman’s Point. Cold temperatures, strong wind, darkness and reduced oxygen make this section challenging.

Gilman’s Point sits on the crater rim at approximately 5,685 metres. Reaching it is a significant achievement.

If your health, energy and weather conditions allow, you will continue around the crater rim. The path passes Stella Point before reaching Uhuru Peak.

At 5,895 metres, Uhuru Peak is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent.

You will have a short time for photographs before beginning the descent. Remaining at the summit longer than necessary is unsafe because of the extreme altitude and low temperatures.

You will descend to Kibo Hut for a short rest and meal. After collecting the remaining equipment, you will continue down towards Horombo Hut.

The long descent can place considerable pressure on your knees. Trekking poles are strongly recommended.

After approximately 12 to 16 hours of walking, you will arrive at Horombo Hut for dinner and rest.

Reaching the summit cannot be guaranteed. The guide may turn a climber around because of altitude illness, severe exhaustion, dangerous weather or another safety concern.

Starting elevation: Approximately 4,703 metres
Highest point: Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,720 metres
Walking time: Approximately 12–16 hours
Habitat: Arctic summit zone, alpine desert and moorland
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

After breakfast, the final day of your Top 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Rongai Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 begins with a long descent through the moorland.

The trail passes Mandara Hut before entering the montane rainforest. The lower sections may become muddy and slippery after rain.

As you descend, the air becomes warmer and contains more oxygen. The forest becomes dense, with opportunities to hear birds and occasionally see monkeys.

At Marangu Gate, you will complete the park checkout procedures and say goodbye to the mountain crew.

Climbers who reach Gilman’s Point or Uhuru Peak normally receive the appropriate certificate according to the applicable park procedures.

A Gowitos Safaris & Holidays representative will meet you at the gate and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

Starting elevation: Approximately 3,720 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 1,860 metres
Walking time: Approximately 5–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland and montane rainforest
Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Six-Day Versus Seven-Day Rongai Route

The six-day and seven-day Rongai programmes follow the same general mountain trail, but the daily walking schedule is different.

On the six-day itinerary, climbers normally travel from Simba Camp through Second Cave to Kikelewa Camp in one day. This creates a longer second day and removes one overnight acclimatisation stage.

The seven-day programme normally spends a night at Second Cave before continuing to Kikelewa and Mawenzi Tarn. This provides more time for gradual altitude adjustment.

The Top 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Rongai Route may be suitable for fit climbers with limited time. However, first-time high-altitude trekkers may benefit from the additional day.

How Difficult Is the Rongai Route?

Rongai is sometimes described as one of Kilimanjaro’s gentler routes because its early gradient is generally gradual. However, climbing to 5,895 metres is never easy.

The main challenges include:

  • Six consecutive days of trekking
  • A long second day
  • Limited acclimatisation time
  • High altitude
  • Cold summit temperatures
  • Basic mountain facilities
  • A summit day lasting up to 16 hours
  • A long descent to Horombo Hut

The final climb from Kibo Hut is steep, cold and physically demanding. Good cardiovascular fitness, leg strength, endurance and mental preparation are required.

Altitude and Acclimatisation

Altitude is the main challenge during the 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Rongai Route.

Reduced oxygen can affect anyone regardless of fitness, age or hiking experience. The shorter itinerary provides less time for altitude adjustment than the seven-day Rongai programme.

Common mild symptoms may include:

  • Headache
  • Reduced appetite
  • Tiredness
  • Poor sleep
  • Mild nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Shortness of breath during physical activity

Report every symptom honestly to your guide. Hiding symptoms can allow a manageable condition to become dangerous.

Severe altitude illness requires immediate descent. The lead guide has the authority to stop a climber from continuing when health or safety is at risk.

Walking slowly, drinking enough water, eating properly and resting can support acclimatisation but cannot remove every risk.

Physical Preparation

Begin preparing several weeks or months before the climb.

Recommended training activities include:

  • Regular hill walking
  • Long-distance hiking
  • Stair climbing
  • Cardiovascular exercise
  • Leg and core strengthening
  • Walking with a loaded daypack
  • Consecutive hiking days
  • Balance and mobility exercises

Use your intended Kilimanjaro hiking boots during training. They should be comfortable and properly broken in before arrival.

Accommodation on the Rongai Route

The first three nights are normally spent camping at Simba, Kikelewa and Mawenzi Tarn camps.

The mountain crew sets up and packs the tents. Two climbers usually share one sleeping tent unless a different arrangement is confirmed.

Kibo Hut and Horombo Hut provide basic shared dormitory accommodation. Toilet and dining facilities are shared.

Regular showers are not available on the mountain. Warm water may be provided for basic washing when practical.

Best Time to Climb the Rongai Route

The Top 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Rongai Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 can be climbed throughout the year.

January to Early March

These months often provide relatively warm conditions and clearer mornings. Snow may remain around the summit.

June to October

This is one of the most popular climbing periods. Conditions are normally drier, but temperatures on the upper mountain can become extremely cold.

November and December

Short rains may occur. Rongai’s northern location can sometimes receive less rain than the southern slopes, but wet conditions remain possible.

April and May

These are generally the wettest months. The northern side may be drier than other Kilimanjaro routes, but rain, cloud and muddy trails can still occur.

Weather on Mount Kilimanjaro remains unpredictable during every season.
