Top 7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route 2027, 2028 & 2029

Explore Tours

The Top 7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 follows a scenic western approach through rainforest, heath, moorland and alpine desert before reaching the summit of Africa’s highest mountain.

The route begins at Londorossi Gate and follows a quiet forest trail to Mti Mkubwa Camp. It then crosses the Shira Plateau before joining Kilimanjaro’s southern circuit. Climbers pass Lava Tower, descend into the Barranco Valley and cross the Barranco Wall before continuing to Barafu Camp for the summit attempt.

The seven-day itinerary is shorter and more physically demanding than the eight-day Lemosho programme. Day five combines the journey from Barranco through Karanga to Barafu, creating a long day immediately before the summit attempt. Climbers who prefer a slower schedule and more acclimatisation time should consider the eight-day option.

Gowitos Safaris & Holidays organises the climb with licensed mountain guides, experienced porters, professional cooks, camping equipment, meals and safety support.

7 Days Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route Overview

The 7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route approaches Kilimanjaro from its western side. The first section passes through montane rainforest before climbing onto the Shira Plateau.

From Shira, the trail enters the alpine desert and climbs to Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 metres. You will then descend to Barranco Camp, following the important acclimatisation principle of walking high and sleeping lower.

After crossing the Barranco Wall, the route continues through Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp. The summit attempt normally starts around midnight on the sixth day.

Climbers ascend to Stella Point before continuing around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. The descent follows the Mweka Route.

Detailed 7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route Itinerary

Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Your Top 7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 begins after breakfast at your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

A representative from Gowitos Safaris & Holidays will collect you and drive towards Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro’s western side.

At the gate, your guide will complete the necessary registration and park entry procedures. The mountain crew will organise food, camping equipment and porter loads while you prepare your daypack.

Depending on road conditions, you may continue by four-wheel-drive vehicle to the Lemosho trailhead. The trek then begins through Kilimanjaro’s montane rainforest.

This section is usually green and humid. Rain can occur at any time, so waterproof clothing should remain easily accessible.

The trail passes beneath tall trees, moss, ferns and thick vegetation. You may hear or occasionally see blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys and different forest birds.

Your guide will establish a slow walking pace from the beginning. Moving slowly helps conserve energy and allows your body to begin adapting to the increasing elevation.

After approximately three to four hours, you will reach Mti Mkubwa Camp. The mountain crew will prepare dinner while your guide conducts the first routine health check.

Starting elevation: Approximately 2,100–2,400 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 2,650 metres
Walking time: Approximately 3–4 hours
Habitat: Montane rainforest
Accommodation: Mti Mkubwa Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

After breakfast, the 7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route continues through the upper forest.

The trees gradually become shorter as you enter the heath and moorland zone. The enclosed rainforest gives way to open slopes with broader views.

The trail climbs steadily towards the western edge of the Shira Plateau. This section includes a considerable elevation gain, so you should maintain a slow and controlled pace.

On a clear day, you may see Kibo rising above the plateau. Behind you, the land extends towards the lower slopes and surrounding plains.

Shira is the remains of one of Kilimanjaro’s older volcanic formations. Its broad plateau creates one of the most distinctive landscapes on the Lemosho Route.

After reaching Shira 1 Camp, you will have time to rest and enjoy the surrounding scenery. Temperatures can fall quickly after sunset, making warm clothing necessary.

Your guide will conduct the daily health assessment and explain the next stage across the Shira Plateau.

Starting elevation: Approximately 2,650 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,610 metres
Walking time: Approximately 5–7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest, heath and moorland
Accommodation: Shira 1 Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

The third day of your Top 7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 crosses the Shira Plateau.

After breakfast, you will follow a gradual trail through open moorland. Giant heathers, grasses and other plants adapted to the high-altitude environment grow across the plateau.

Although the overall distance is manageable, the increasing elevation means you should continue walking slowly and drinking water regularly.

The open terrain provides wide views when the sky is clear. Kibo appears ahead, while Mount Meru and the surrounding plains may be visible behind you.

Depending on the route selected by your guide, you may walk near Shira Cathedral or another viewpoint before continuing to Shira 2 Camp.

The plateau is exposed to strong sunlight, wind, rain and sudden temperature changes. Sunscreen, waterproof clothing and warm layers should remain in your daypack.

After reaching Shira 2, your guide may include a short acclimatisation walk if the group’s health, weather and available time permit.

Starting elevation: Approximately 3,610 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,850 metres
Walking time: Approximately 3–5 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Accommodation: Shira 2 Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp via Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Day four is an important acclimatisation stage on the 7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route.

You will leave Shira 2 after breakfast and climb gradually towards Lava Tower. The vegetation becomes sparse as the trail enters the alpine desert.

Lava Tower is a large volcanic formation situated at approximately 4,600 metres. Reaching this elevation allows your body to experience thinner air before descending to sleep at a lower camp.

Depending on weather and the group’s progress, lunch may be served close to Lava Tower.

Some climbers experience a temporary headache, reduced appetite, nausea or unusual tiredness at this elevation. Report every symptom honestly to your guide.

After Lava Tower, the trail descends into the Barranco Valley. Giant groundsels and lobelias begin appearing as you enter the more sheltered valley.

Barranco Camp lies beneath the famous Barranco Wall. When conditions are clear, the camp provides impressive views of Kibo and Kilimanjaro’s southern glaciers.

The descent from Lava Tower to Barranco follows the walk-high-and-sleep-lower principle, which supports altitude acclimatisation.

Starting elevation: Approximately 3,850 metres
Highest point: Approximately 4,600 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,950 metres
Walking time: Approximately 6–8 hours
Habitat: Moorland and alpine desert
Accommodation: Barranco Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5: Barranco Camp via Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

The fifth day of your Top 7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 is a long and physically demanding stage.

After an early breakfast, you will begin climbing the Barranco Wall. Although the wall appears steep from camp, it does not normally require technical climbing equipment.

You will use your hands for balance in several places while following your guide’s instructions. The trail can become busy because climbers from multiple Kilimanjaro routes cross the wall.

The climb normally takes approximately one to two hours. From the upper section, you may enjoy views of the southern glaciers and surrounding valleys.

The trail then crosses a series of ridges before descending into the Karanga Valley. A final climb leads to Karanga Camp, where you may stop for lunch or a short rest.

Unlike the eight-day Lemosho itinerary, the seven-day route does not spend the night at Karanga. You will continue climbing through the alpine desert towards Barafu Camp.

The trail becomes increasingly dry, rocky and exposed. Strong wind and rapidly changing temperatures are possible.

After reaching Barafu, you will eat, rest and receive a detailed summit briefing. Your guide will explain the departure time, expected weather, clothing system and safety procedures.

Organise your headlamp, water, snacks, warm layers and gloves before going to sleep. The summit attempt normally begins around midnight.

Starting elevation: Approximately 3,950 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 4,673 metres
Walking time: Approximately 7–9 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Accommodation: Barafu Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and early dinner

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp

Summit day is the longest and most difficult part of the 7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route.

You will wake shortly before midnight, dress in your warm summit clothing and have a light meal or hot drink.

The ascent begins in darkness using headlamps. Your guide will establish a slow, controlled pace over the steep volcanic scree.

Cold temperatures, wind, darkness and reduced oxygen make this stage physically and mentally challenging. Your guide will monitor each climber closely.

The first major objective is Stella Point, located on the crater rim at approximately 5,756 metres. Reaching Stella Point is a significant achievement.

If your health, weather and energy allow, you will continue around the crater rim towards Uhuru Peak. The trail may pass areas of snow and ice before reaching the summit.

Uhuru Peak stands at 5,895 metres and is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent.

You will have a short time for photographs before beginning the descent. Remaining at the summit longer than necessary is unsafe because of the extreme elevation and cold.

You will descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest and meal. After collecting your remaining equipment, you will continue down towards Mweka Camp.

The descent places considerable pressure on the knees, making trekking poles helpful.

By the time you reach Mweka Camp, you may have completed between 12 and 16 hours of walking.

Summit success cannot be guaranteed. The guide may turn a climber around because of altitude illness, severe exhaustion, dangerous weather or another safety concern.

Starting elevation: Approximately 4,673 metres
Highest point: Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,100 metres
Walking time: Approximately 12–16 hours
Habitat: Arctic summit zone, alpine desert and rainforest
Accommodation: Mweka Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

After breakfast, the final day of your Top 7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 begins with a descent through the rainforest.

The lower trail may be wet, muddy and slippery, especially after rain. Walk carefully and use trekking poles when necessary.

As you descend, the temperature becomes warmer and oxygen levels increase. The vegetation becomes denser, and you may hear forest birds or occasionally see monkeys.

At Mweka Gate, you will complete the park checkout procedures and say goodbye to the mountain crew.

Climbers who reach Stella Point or Uhuru Peak normally receive the relevant certificate according to the applicable park procedures.

A Gowitos Safaris & Holidays representative will meet you at the gate and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

Starting elevation: Approximately 3,100 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 1,640 metres
Walking time: Approximately 3–4 hours
Habitat: Montane rainforest
Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Seven-Day Versus Eight-Day Lemosho Route

The seven-day and eight-day Lemosho itineraries follow the same general trail, but the daily schedule is different.

On the seven-day route, climbers normally travel from Barranco through Karanga to Barafu in one day. This creates a longer day immediately before the summit attempt.

The eight-day programme normally spends a night at Karanga Camp. This provides more time to rest and adjust to the elevation before moving to Barafu.

The seven-day option may suit experienced, physically fit trekkers who have limited time. Climbers who prioritise acclimatisation and a more comfortable pace should consider the eight-day itinerary.

How Difficult Is the Lemosho Route?

The 7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route is a non-technical trek, meaning that standard climbing ropes and advanced mountaineering skills are not normally required.

However, the climb remains physically and mentally demanding because of:

  • Seven consecutive days of trekking
  • High altitude
  • Changing weather
  • Basic camping conditions
  • The Barranco Wall
  • A long fifth day from Barranco to Barafu
  • Cold summit temperatures
  • A summit day lasting up to 16 hours

Good cardiovascular fitness, leg strength, endurance and mental preparation are important.

Altitude and Acclimatisation

Altitude is the greatest challenge when climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Reduced oxygen can affect anyone regardless of age or physical fitness.

Common mild symptoms include:

  • Headache
  • Reduced appetite
  • Tiredness
  • Poor sleep
  • Mild nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Shortness of breath during activity

All symptoms must be reported honestly to the guide. Hiding symptoms can allow a manageable condition to become dangerous.

Serious altitude illness requires immediate descent. The lead guide has the authority to stop a climber from continuing when health or safety is at risk.

Walking slowly, drinking water, eating properly and resting can support acclimatisation but cannot remove every risk.

Training for the Lemosho Route

Begin preparing several weeks or months before travelling.

Recommended training activities include:

  • Regular hill walking
  • Long-distance hiking
  • Stair climbing
  • Cardiovascular exercise
  • Leg and core strengthening
  • Walking with a loaded daypack
  • Consecutive hiking days
  • Balance and mobility exercises

Whenever possible, train in the boots you intend to wear on Kilimanjaro. Your boots should be comfortable and properly broken in before arrival.

Camping Accommodation

Accommodation during the climb is provided in mountain tents at designated campsites.

The mountain crew sets up and packs the tents. Two climbers normally share one sleeping tent unless a different arrangement is confirmed.

Public campsite toilet facilities are basic. A private portable toilet may be arranged when requested and included in the quotation.

There are no regular showers on the mountain. Warm water is normally provided for basic washing when practical.

Best Time to Climb the Lemosho Route

The Top 7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 can be climbed throughout the year.

January to Early March

These months often provide relatively warm conditions and clearer mornings. Snow may remain around the summit.

June to October

This is one of the most popular climbing periods. Conditions are generally drier, but the upper mountain can become extremely cold.

Short rains may occur, although clear periods are also possible. Trails can be quieter than during the busiest months.
