Detailed 5 Days Tanzania Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Your Best 5 Days Tanzania Safari Adventure 2027, 2028 & 2029 begins in the morning when your Gowitos Safaris & Holidays driver-guide collects you from your hotel in Arusha.

After introductions and a short safari briefing, you will leave the city and drive towards Tarangire National Park. The journey passes through farming areas, small communities and open countryside before reaching the park.

Once the entrance formalities have been completed, you will begin your first game drive. Tarangire is known for its enormous baobab trees, varied birdlife and large elephant population.

The Tarangire River is the park’s principal permanent water source. During the dry season, it attracts animals from the surrounding ecosystem. Elephants, zebras, wildebeests, buffaloes, impalas, waterbucks and giraffes may gather near the river and seasonal wetlands.

Lions are also present in Tarangire, while cheetahs and leopards are possible but less predictable sightings. Your guide will select suitable routes based on recent animal movements, weather and road conditions.

At midday, you will stop at a designated picnic area for lunch. The game drive continues during the afternoon, allowing you to explore another part of the park.

Tarangire is also rewarding for birdwatchers. Hornbills, kingfishers, ostriches, eagles and colourful bee-eaters are among the many species that may be observed.

In the late afternoon, you will leave the park and travel to your selected lodge, tented camp or campsite around Mto wa Mbu or Karatu.

Meals: Lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Lodge, tented camp or campsite near Mto wa Mbu or Karatu

Day 2: Karatu to Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, your 5 Days Tanzania Safari Adventure continues through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area towards Serengeti National Park.

The road climbs into the Ngorongoro highlands, where the air becomes cooler and the surrounding vegetation changes. When conditions permit, you may stop briefly at a viewpoint overlooking the Ngorongoro Crater.

You will then travel through the wider conservation area. Maasai communities live in permitted sections of this landscape alongside their livestock and surrounding wildlife.

As you descend from the highlands, the landscape gradually opens into the vast Serengeti plains. After entering Serengeti National Park, you will begin an en-route game drive towards the central region.

The Serengeti supports a remarkable variety of animals throughout the year. Wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, giraffes, elephants and buffaloes are found across its grasslands and woodland.

Lions are regularly seen in the Serengeti, sometimes resting in the grass, gathering around rocky kopjes or watching grazing animals. Cheetahs favour the open plains, while leopards may be found around river valleys and wooded areas.

A picnic lunch will be served at a designated location. Your afternoon game drive will continue towards your selected lodge, permanent tented camp or campsite.

You will arrive during the late afternoon or early evening, with time to settle in before dinner.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Lodge, tented camp or campsite in Serengeti National Park

Day 3: Full-Day Game Drive in Serengeti National Park

The third day of your Best 5 Days Tanzania Safari Adventure 2027, 2028 & 2029 is dedicated to exploring Serengeti National Park.

After breakfast, you will begin a morning game drive. Animals are often active during the cooler hours, and the early light provides excellent conditions for photography.

Your driver-guide will plan the route according to recent wildlife sightings, seasonal animal movements and road conditions. There is no fixed path because every day in the Serengeti is different.

You may encounter a pride of lions resting after a night of hunting, elephants crossing the plains or giraffes feeding among acacia trees. Hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds may be observed around rivers and pools, while spotted hyenas and jackals are often seen across open areas.

The Serengeti’s rocky kopjes provide shelter and observation points for lions and other animals. The river valleys support denser vegetation where leopards may occasionally be found resting in trees.

The park is also central to the Great Migration, the continuous movement of wildebeests, zebras and gazelles through the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem. The location of the main herds changes with rainfall, fresh grazing and water availability.

Your itinerary can be adjusted to focus on the expected migration area when travel dates, road conditions and accommodation locations allow. However, the migration is a natural event, and the exact location of the herds cannot be guaranteed.

Lunch may be served as a picnic during the game drive or at your accommodation, depending on the confirmed arrangement. The wildlife experience continues during the afternoon before returning to camp or the lodge.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Lodge, tented camp or campsite in Serengeti National Park

Day 4: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater and Karatu

After an early breakfast, you will leave the Serengeti and travel towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Wildlife may still be encountered along the road, giving you additional viewing opportunities before reaching the crater.

Your safari vehicle will descend approximately 600 metres along the winding access road to the Ngorongoro Crater floor.

The crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. Its floor covers approximately 260 square kilometres and contains grassland, woodland, freshwater pools, wetlands and a soda lake.

These different habitats support a high concentration of animals. During your game drive, you may see zebras, wildebeests, buffaloes, gazelles, warthogs, spotted hyenas and lions.

Large male elephants are sometimes seen around the Lerai Forest, while hippos gather in pools and wetlands. The crater is also one of Tanzania’s important habitats for the endangered black rhinoceros. Rhinoceros sightings are possible but cannot be promised.

Lake Magadi attracts flamingos and other waterbirds when feeding and water conditions are suitable. Your guide will explain the crater’s volcanic history, wildlife and conservation importance during the drive.

You will stop at a designated picnic site for lunch before continuing through another section of the crater. Later in the afternoon, you will ascend to the rim and travel to your accommodation around Karatu or Mto wa Mbu.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Lodge, tented camp or campsite near Karatu or Mto wa Mbu

Day 5: Lake Manyara National Park and Return to Arusha

The final day of your 5 Days Tanzania Safari Adventure begins with breakfast followed by a drive to Lake Manyara National Park.

Although smaller than Tarangire and Serengeti, Lake Manyara contains several contrasting environments. Its habitats include groundwater forest, acacia woodland, open grassland, marshes and the alkaline lake.

The groundwater forest provides shelter for blue monkeys and troops of baboons. Elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras and different antelope species may also be observed within the park.

Lake Manyara is historically associated with tree-climbing lions, although these lions are not always seen. Your guide will search suitable areas while also focusing on the park’s wider wildlife and scenery.

The lake and surrounding wetlands support flamingos, pelicans, storks, herons and numerous other waterbirds. Bird numbers vary according to water levels and seasonal conditions.

You will stop for a picnic lunch at a designated location before completing your final game drive. In the afternoon, you will leave Lake Manyara and begin the return journey to Arusha.

Arrival is expected during the late afternoon or early evening. Your driver-guide will drop you off at your hotel or another agreed location within the city.

This marks the end of the Best 5 Days Tanzania Safari Adventure 2027, 2028 & 2029.

Destinations Included

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire provides a strong introduction to the Northern Circuit. Its woodland, baobab trees, seasonal wetlands and river create a landscape that differs considerably from the open Serengeti.

The Tarangire River becomes particularly important during the dry season, when animals travel towards permanent water. Elephant sightings are a major attraction, but the park also supports predators, antelopes and extensive birdlife.

Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park is the central destination in the Best 5 Days Tanzania Safari Adventure 2027, 2028 & 2029.

Its ecosystem supports resident wildlife throughout the year, including lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, hippos, hyenas and numerous antelope species.

Two nights in the Serengeti provide more time to explore and reduce the need to rush through this extensive park.

Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater combines remarkable scenery with excellent wildlife-viewing opportunities. Its relatively compact floor makes it possible to observe many animals during one game drive.

Conditions around the crater rim can be cold, particularly early in the morning. Carrying a warm jacket is recommended throughout the year.

Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara provides a relaxed conclusion to the safari. The park’s forest, woodland, floodplain and lakeshore habitats support primates, herbivores and abundant birdlife.

Water levels in the lake change naturally, influencing the number and distribution of waterbirds.

Private and Group-Joining Options

The 5 Days Tanzania Safari Adventure can be arranged privately or as a group-joining tour.

Private Safari

A private safari gives your party exclusive use of the vehicle and driver-guide. It provides more flexibility for families, couples, photographers and friends travelling together.

Departure times, accommodation level and certain parts of the programme can be adjusted according to your requirements.

Group-Joining Safari

A group-joining safari allows travellers to share a vehicle, driver-guide and fixed itinerary. It is often suitable for solo travellers or guests looking for a more affordable arrangement.

Group departures depend on available seats, confirmed dates and compatible accommodation categories.

The camping option offers a simple experience close to nature. Accommodation is provided at designated campsites, with shared facilities where applicable.

Best Time for a 5 Days Tanzania Safari Adventure

The Best 5 Days Tanzania Safari Adventure 2027, 2028 & 2029 can be enjoyed throughout the year.

January to March

This period generally offers green scenery and warm conditions. Depending on rainfall, the wildebeest calving season may occur around Ndutu and the southern Serengeti.

April and May

The long rains create lush landscapes and bring fewer visitors. Roads may become muddy, but the parks remain open and wildlife viewing continues.

June to October

These are normally the drier months. Animals often gather near permanent water sources, and thinner vegetation may make them easier to locate.

This is also a popular travel period, so early accommodation reservations are advisable.

November and December

Short rains refresh the plains and support new vegetation. Migratory birds begin arriving, while the wildebeest herds may move towards the southern ecosystem.

Weather and wildlife patterns can change, so these periods should be treated as general guidance rather than guarantees.

Planning Your Safari for 2027, 2028 or 2029

Travellers planning a 5 Days Tanzania Safari Adventure in 2027, 2028 or 2029 should make reservations early, particularly for July, August, September and the Christmas season.

Park fees, concession charges, accommodation prices, government taxes and other operational expenses may change between travel years. Gowitos Safaris & Holidays will calculate the quotation using the applicable rates for your chosen dates.

When requesting a quotation, provide:

  • Preferred travel dates
  • Number of adults
  • Number and ages of children
  • Accommodation category
  • Private or group-joining preference
  • Room arrangement
  • Arrival and departure details
  • Dietary requirements
  • Mobility considerations
  • Special wildlife or photography interests

What to Pack

Pack lightly because luggage space inside safari vehicles can be limited. Soft-sided bags are generally more practical than large hard-shell suitcases.

Recommended items include:

  • Comfortable lightweight clothing
  • Warm jacket or fleece
  • Closed walking shoes
  • Sun hat and sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Personal medication
  • Camera and spare batteries
  • Binoculars
  • Small day bag
  • Passport or identification documents
  • Chargers and power bank
  • Rain jacket
  • Reusable water bottle where appropriate

Neutral colours such as brown, beige, green and grey are practical for game drives. Layered clothing will help you remain comfortable as temperatures change.

Responsible Safari Travel

Wildlife should always be observed from a respectful distance. Guests must follow their driver-guide’s instructions and remain inside the vehicle except at authorised locations.

Animals should never be fed, called or disturbed to obtain photographs. Loud noise can affect both wildlife and the experience of other visitors.

All waste must be disposed of responsibly. Protecting Tanzania’s parks requires cooperation between visitors, guides, communities and conservation authorities.
