2-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park
Your safari begins in the morning when your Gowitos Safaris and Holidays driver-guide collects you from your hotel in Arusha. After a short briefing, you will leave the city and travel southwest through the Tanzanian countryside towards Tarangire National Park.
The journey takes you past small towns, farms and open landscapes before reaching the park’s entrance. Once the necessary registration has been completed, you will enter Tarangire and begin your first game drive.
Tarangire is especially famous for its elephants. Large family groups are often seen moving between the woodland and the Tarangire River, particularly during the dry season. The river is an important water source and attracts numerous animals from the surrounding areas.
During the game drive, you may encounter giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, impalas, waterbucks, warthogs, buffaloes and different antelope species. Lions are also present, while leopards and cheetahs may occasionally be seen with patience and good timing.
The park’s ancient baobab trees create a distinctive landscape. Some of these enormous trees have survived for hundreds of years and provide food, shade and shelter for wildlife. Birdwatchers can also enjoy spotting colourful species across the woodland, riverbanks and seasonal wetlands.
At midday, you will stop at a designated picnic site for lunch. Afterward, the game drive continues through another section of the park, giving you further opportunities to observe animals and take photographs.
In the late afternoon, you will leave Tarangire and drive towards Karatu or the Ngorongoro highlands. You will arrive at your selected accommodation in time to relax, enjoy dinner and prepare for the next day’s crater safari.
Meals: Lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Lodge, tented camp or campsite near Karatu or Ngorongoro

Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive and Return to Arusha
After an early breakfast, you will travel to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The drive climbs through the highlands before reaching the crater rim, where you may stop briefly to appreciate the dramatic view across the caldera.
You will then descend along the winding road to the Ngorongoro Crater floor for a game drive. Covering approximately 260 square kilometres, the crater contains grassland, woodland, wetlands, freshwater pools and a soda lake. These habitats support an impressive variety of animals within a relatively compact area.
The crater is one of Tanzania’s best places to look for the Big Five. Lions, elephants, buffaloes and leopards live within the wider conservation area, while the endangered black rhinoceros is sometimes seen on the open plains. Wildlife sightings vary naturally, and no particular species can be guaranteed.
Other animals commonly found on the crater floor include zebras, wildebeests, gazelles, warthogs, hyenas and jackals. Hippos can often be observed in the pools, while Lake Magadi attracts flamingos and other waterbirds when conditions are favourable.
Your driver-guide will choose suitable routes based on recent wildlife movements. Along the way, you will learn about the crater’s formation, animal behaviour and the relationship between conservation and the Maasai communities living within the wider Ngorongoro area.
A picnic lunch will be served at a designated location inside the crater. After lunch and a final game drive, you will ascend to the crater rim and begin the journey back to Arusha.
You will arrive during the late afternoon or early evening, depending on traffic and road conditions. Drop-off can be arranged at your Arusha hotel or another agreed location within the city.
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
Accommodation: Not included
Destinations Included
Tarangire National Park
Tarangire National Park is one of the most distinctive destinations on Tanzania’s Northern Circuit. Its landscape combines open grassland, acacia woodland, seasonal swamps and enormous baobab trees.
During the dry months, the Tarangire River draws wildlife from a wide surrounding area. Elephants are especially prominent, but visitors may also see giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, buffaloes, antelopes and predators.
The park is also an excellent birding destination, with hundreds of recorded species. Its varied environment makes it worthwhile throughout the year, although wildlife concentrations change according to rainfall and water availability.
Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and one of Tanzania’s most celebrated safari destinations. Its enclosed landscape creates excellent conditions for observing numerous animals during a single game drive.
The crater floor contains grazing areas, woodland, wetlands and lakes. This diversity supports both predators and prey, creating an active ecosystem that can be explored throughout the year.
The elevated crater rim also provides impressive views over one of East Africa’s most remarkable natural formations.

Best Time for This Safari
This safari can be enjoyed throughout the year. Each season offers a different experience.
June to October
These are generally the drier months. Wildlife often gathers around permanent water sources, making animals easier to locate in Tarangire. Days are usually sunny, although mornings around Ngorongoro can be cold.
November to March
Short rains can bring fresh vegetation and clearer landscapes. This period is excellent for photography and birdwatching, with many migratory bird species present.
April and May
The long-rain period creates green scenery and often brings fewer visitors. Some roads may become muddy, but both Tarangire and Ngorongoro remain accessible under normal conditions.
What to Pack
For a comfortable two-day safari, we recommend bringing:
- Comfortable, neutral-coloured clothing
- A warm jacket for the Ngorongoro highlands
- Closed walking shoes or trainers
- Sun hat and sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Personal medication
- Camera and spare batteries
- Binoculars
- Small day bag
- Passport or identification documents
- Insect repellent
- Reusable water bottle where appropriate
Temperatures can change considerably between Tarangire and the Ngorongoro highlands. Dressing in light layers makes it easier to remain comfortable throughout the journey.
