Best 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route 2027, 2028 & 2029
Explore Tours
The Best 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 follows one of Kilimanjaro’s steepest and most direct approaches. The trail begins on the mountain’s southern side and climbs rapidly through dense rainforest before joining the southern circuit around Barranco Camp.
Umbwe is known for its quiet forest trail, narrow ridges and dramatic views. However, its rapid altitude gain provides less time for acclimatisation than longer Kilimanjaro routes. The six-day itinerary is therefore most suitable for physically strong trekkers with previous high-altitude experience.
After reaching Barranco Camp, the route crosses the Barranco Wall and continues through Karanga and Barafu camps. The summit attempt begins around midnight and leads to Stella Point before continuing to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.
Gowitos Safaris & Holidays organises the expedition with licensed mountain guides, experienced porters, professional cooks, camping equipment, meals and safety support.
6 Days Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route Overview
The 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route starts at Umbwe Gate and climbs through rainforest to Umbwe Cave Camp.
The second day follows a steep ridge before descending into the Barranco Valley. From Barranco Camp, the route joins trails used by climbers from Machame and Lemosho.
You will cross the Barranco Wall and continue to Karanga Camp. The route then climbs through the alpine desert to Barafu Camp, where you will prepare for the summit attempt.
After reaching Stella Point and, when conditions allow, Uhuru Peak, the descent follows the Mweka Route through Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate.

Detailed 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route Itinerary
Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp
Your Best 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 begins after breakfast at your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
A representative from Gowitos Safaris & Holidays will collect you and drive towards Umbwe Gate on Kilimanjaro’s southern side.
At the gate, your guide will complete the required park registration and entry procedures. The mountain crew will organise food, camping equipment and porter loads while you prepare your daypack.
After registration, you will begin walking through the montane rainforest. The Umbwe trail climbs steeply from the beginning and provides very little flat ground.
The forest is dense and humid, with tall trees, moss, ferns and thick undergrowth. Rain is possible throughout the year, so waterproof clothing should remain accessible.
The trail follows a ridge between two valleys. Tree roots, rocks, mud and steep sections can make the path challenging, particularly after rain.
Your guide will maintain a slow and controlled pace. Attempting to walk too quickly on the first day can create unnecessary exhaustion before reaching higher elevations.
After approximately five to seven hours, you will arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp. The camp is named after a nearby rock formation rather than a cave used for accommodation.
Dinner will be served at camp, followed by the first routine health assessment.
Starting elevation: Approximately 1,640 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 2,850 metres
Walking time: Approximately 5–7 hours
Habitat: Montane rainforest
Accommodation: Umbwe Cave Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp
The second day of the 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route continues along a steep ridge.
After breakfast, you will leave Umbwe Cave and climb through the upper forest. The trees gradually become shorter as the trail enters the heath and moorland zone.
The path remains steep, with exposed sections that provide dramatic views when the weather is clear. You may see the Western Breach, Barranco Valley and the surrounding ridges.
As the vegetation becomes sparse, the trail enters more open and rocky terrain. The considerable altitude gain makes slow walking essential.
The route eventually descends slightly towards Barranco Camp. Giant groundsels and lobelias grow in the valley, creating one of Kilimanjaro’s most distinctive landscapes.
Barranco Camp sits beneath the imposing Barranco Wall. When clouds clear, the campsite provides excellent views of Kibo and Kilimanjaro’s southern glaciers.
Reaching almost 4,000 metres on the second day makes this a demanding stage. Report every headache, loss of appetite, nausea, dizziness or unusual tiredness to your guide.
Starting elevation: Approximately 2,850 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,950 metres
Walking time: Approximately 5–7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest, heath and moorland
Accommodation: Barranco Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
After an early breakfast, you will begin climbing the Barranco Wall.
The wall looks steep when viewed from camp, but it does not normally require ropes or technical climbing equipment. You will use your hands for balance in several places while following the guide’s instructions.
The trail can become busy because the Umbwe Route joins climbers arriving from Machame and Lemosho.
Your guide will maintain a safe distance from other groups and identify suitable places to wait. Rushing on the wall can create unnecessary risks.
The climb to the upper section usually takes approximately one to two hours. When conditions are clear, you may enjoy views of the southern glaciers, Kibo and the surrounding valleys.
After crossing the wall, the trail follows a series of ridges and descents. You will eventually enter the Karanga Valley before completing a final climb to Karanga Camp.
Although the walking distance is relatively short, the repeated ascents and descents make the day physically active.
The afternoon provides valuable time to rest and adjust to the elevation before climbing to Barafu.
Starting elevation: Approximately 3,950 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 4,035 metres
Walking time: Approximately 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Accommodation: Karanga Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
The fourth day of your Best 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 takes you to the final summit base.
After breakfast, you will leave Karanga Camp and walk through dry, rocky alpine terrain. Vegetation becomes extremely limited as the elevation increases.
The trail passes the junction connecting with the Mweka descent route before continuing towards Barafu Camp.
This exposed landscape can experience intense sunlight, strong wind and sudden temperature changes. Continue walking slowly and drinking water regularly.
Barafu means “ice” in Swahili. The camp sits on a rocky ridge at approximately 4,673 metres and provides limited protection from the wind.
After reaching camp, you will eat and rest. Your guide will provide a detailed summit briefing covering departure time, weather, required clothing and safety procedures.
Prepare your summit equipment before sleeping. Important items include:
- Thermal base layers
- Insulated summit jacket
- Waterproof outer layers
- Warm hat
- Neck gaiter or balaclava
- Inner and insulated gloves
- Headlamp and spare batteries
- Water
- Energy snacks
- Trekking poles
Dinner will be served early because the summit attempt normally begins around midnight.
Starting elevation: Approximately 4,035 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 4,673 metres
Walking time: Approximately 3–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Accommodation: Barafu Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and early dinner
Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp
Summit day is the longest and most demanding stage of the 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route.
You will wake shortly before midnight, dress in your warm summit clothing and have a light meal or hot drink.
The climb begins in darkness using headlamps. Your guide will set a slow and controlled pace across steep volcanic scree.
Cold temperatures, wind, darkness and reduced oxygen make the ascent physically and mentally difficult. The mountain guide will monitor every climber throughout the journey.
The first major objective is Stella Point, situated on the crater rim at approximately 5,756 metres. Reaching this point is a significant achievement.
If your health, weather and energy permit, you will continue around the crater rim towards Uhuru Peak. The trail may pass glaciers, snow and ice.
Uhuru Peak stands at 5,895 metres and is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent.
You will have a short time for photographs before beginning the descent. Climbers should not remain at the summit longer than necessary because of the extreme altitude and cold.
You will descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest and meal. After collecting the remaining equipment, you will continue towards Mweka Camp.
The long descent places considerable pressure on the knees. Trekking poles are strongly recommended.
After approximately 12 to 16 hours of walking, you will arrive at Mweka Camp for dinner and rest.
Reaching the summit cannot be guaranteed. The guide may turn a climber around because of altitude illness, extreme exhaustion, dangerous weather or another safety concern.
Starting elevation: Approximately 4,673 metres
Highest point: Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,100 metres
Walking time: Approximately 12–16 hours
Habitat: Arctic summit zone, alpine desert and rainforest
Accommodation: Mweka Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
After breakfast, the final day of your Best 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 begins with a descent through the rainforest.
The path may be wet, muddy and slippery, especially after rainfall. Walk carefully and use trekking poles when necessary.
As you descend, the temperature becomes warmer and the air contains more oxygen. The forest becomes increasingly dense, with opportunities to hear birds and occasionally see monkeys.
At Mweka Gate, you will complete the park checkout procedures and say goodbye to the mountain crew.
Climbers who reach Stella Point or Uhuru Peak normally receive the appropriate certificate according to the applicable park procedures.
A representative from Gowitos Safaris & Holidays will meet you at the gate and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
Starting elevation: Approximately 3,100 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 1,640 metres
Walking time: Approximately 3–4 hours
Habitat: Montane rainforest
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
Who Should Choose the Umbwe Route?
The 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route is best suited to:
- Strong and experienced hikers
- Climbers with previous high-altitude experience
- Trekkers comfortable with steep trails
- Visitors seeking a quieter initial approach
- Climbers prepared for rapid altitude gain
- Travellers with excellent physical fitness
- People who understand that summit success is not guaranteed
The six-day Umbwe itinerary is generally not the best choice for first-time high-altitude trekkers. Longer routes such as the eight-day Lemosho or nine-day Northern Circuit provide more time for acclimatisation.
How Difficult Is the Umbwe Route?
Umbwe is often regarded as one of Kilimanjaro’s most demanding routes because of its steep ascent and rapid elevation gain.
The trail does not normally require technical mountaineering equipment, but climbers must manage:
- Steep forest trails
- Narrow mountain ridges
- Rapid altitude gain
- Limited acclimatisation time
- Six consecutive days of trekking
- Cold and changing weather
- Basic camping facilities
- The Barranco Wall
- A summit day lasting up to 16 hours
Physical fitness alone does not protect a climber from altitude illness. Previous altitude experience and a slower itinerary can be valuable.
Altitude and Acclimatisation
Altitude is the greatest challenge on the Best 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route.
Reduced oxygen can affect anyone regardless of age, fitness or previous hiking experience. The rapid ascent makes honest communication with your guide particularly important.
Common mild symptoms may include:
- Headache
- Reduced appetite
- Tiredness
- Poor sleep
- Mild nausea
- Dizziness
- Shortness of breath during activity
Report every symptom immediately. Hiding symptoms can allow a manageable condition to become dangerous.
Severe altitude illness requires immediate descent. The lead guide has the authority to stop a climber from continuing when health or safety is at risk.
Walking slowly, drinking sufficient water, eating properly and resting may support acclimatisation, but they cannot eliminate every risk.
Physical Preparation
Begin training several weeks or months before the climb.
Recommended preparation includes:
- Regular hill walking
- Long-distance hiking
- Stair climbing
- Cardiovascular exercise
- Leg and core strengthening
- Walking with a loaded daypack
- Consecutive hiking days
- Steep uphill and downhill training
- Balance and mobility exercises
Train in the hiking boots you intend to use on Kilimanjaro. Your boots should be comfortable and properly broken in before arrival.
Camping Accommodation
Accommodation is provided in mountain tents at designated campsites.
The mountain crew sets up and packs the tents. Two climbers normally share one sleeping tent unless another arrangement is confirmed.
Public campsite toilet facilities are basic. A private portable toilet may be arranged when requested and included in the quotation.
Regular showers are not available. Warm water is normally provided for basic washing when practical.
Best Time to Climb the Umbwe Route
The Best 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 can be attempted throughout the year, but drier periods are generally more suitable because the steep forest trail can become slippery.
January to Early March
These months often provide relatively warm conditions and clearer mornings. Snow may remain around the summit.
June to October
This is one of the most popular climbing periods. Conditions are normally drier, although upper elevations can become extremely cold.
November and December
Short rains may occur. Wet conditions can make the steep Umbwe forest trail more challenging.
April and May
These are usually the wettest months. Heavy rain, mud and poor visibility may make the route particularly difficult.
Weather on Mount Kilimanjaro remains unpredictable during every season.
