Best 5 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route 2027, 2028 & 2029
Explore Tours
The Best 5 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 offers a direct journey to Uhuru Peak through rainforest, moorland and the high-altitude alpine desert. Marangu is the only Mount Kilimanjaro route where climbers sleep in permanent mountain huts instead of tents.
Commonly called the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu follows the same trail during the ascent and descent. Its established path and hut accommodation make it popular, but the five-day schedule remains physically demanding because it allows limited time for acclimatisation.
This climb starts at Marangu Gate and passes through Mandara Hut, Horombo Hut and Kibo Hut before the final nighttime ascent to Uhuru Peak. At 5,895 metres above sea level, Uhuru Peak is the highest point in Africa.
Gowitos Safaris & Holidays organises the climb with licensed mountain guides, porters, cooks, meals, park arrangements and safety support.
5 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route Overview
The 5 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route is suitable for physically fit climbers who prefer hut accommodation and can manage a relatively fast ascent.
The trail begins in the cultivated foothills near Marangu before entering the rainforest. It then rises through heath and moorland to the dry alpine desert around Kibo Hut. The summit attempt begins around midnight, allowing climbers to reach Gilman’s Point near sunrise before continuing to Uhuru Peak.
Although Marangu is sometimes described as an easy Kilimanjaro route, no route to the summit should be considered easy. The trail itself is generally well established, but altitude, cold temperatures, long walking hours and limited acclimatisation make the five-day itinerary challenging.
Climbers who want more time to adjust to the altitude should consider the six-day Marangu itinerary, which normally adds an acclimatisation day at Horombo Hut.

Detailed 5 Days Marangu Route Itinerary
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Your 5 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route begins after breakfast at your hotel. The Gowitos Safaris & Holidays team will collect you and transfer you to Marangu Gate, located at approximately 1,860 metres above sea level.
At the gate, your guide will complete the necessary registration and park formalities. Your luggage will be checked and distributed among the porters while you meet the mountain crew and receive a final briefing.
The first section of the trail passes through Kilimanjaro’s montane rainforest. This area is usually green and humid, with tall trees, moss, ferns and thick undergrowth. Rain is possible at any time, so waterproof clothing should remain accessible in your daypack.
The trail climbs gradually and is generally well maintained. Depending on the weather and time of day, you may hear or see blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys and different forest birds.
Your guide will encourage a slow and steady walking pace. Moving slowly helps conserve energy and allows your body to begin adapting to the increasing altitude.
After approximately four to five hours of walking, you will arrive at Mandara Hut. The huts provide dormitory-style sleeping accommodation, while toilet facilities are shared.
If time, weather and energy levels permit, your guide may lead a short walk towards Maundi Crater. This optional walk offers views of the surrounding landscape and supports gradual acclimatisation.
You will return to Mandara Hut for dinner, a health check and an overnight stay.
Starting elevation: Approximately 1,860 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 2,720 metres
Walking time: Approximately 4–5 hours
Habitat: Montane rainforest
Accommodation: Mandara Hut
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
After breakfast, you will leave Mandara Hut and continue climbing. The forest gradually becomes thinner before giving way to heath and open moorland.
As the vegetation changes, the views become wider. On a clear day, you may see the rocky summit of Mawenzi and the snow-covered Kibo summit in the distance.
The landscape contains giant heathers, grasses and distinctive high-altitude plants. Temperatures can change quickly, particularly when clouds move across the mountain.
The trail follows a steady uphill path. Your guide will maintain a comfortable pace and remind you to drink water regularly. Proper hydration, slow walking and open communication about your health are important throughout the Best 5 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route 2027, 2028 & 2029.
After approximately six to eight hours, you will reach Horombo Hut at around 3,720 metres. Horombo is one of the busier locations on the route because it accommodates both ascending and descending climbers.
After arrival, you can rest while the mountain team prepares dinner. Your guide will perform a routine health check and discuss the next day’s climb to Kibo Hut.
The temperature can drop considerably after sunset, so warm clothing is essential.
Starting elevation: Approximately 2,720 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,720 metres
Walking time: Approximately 6–8 hours
Habitat: Heath and moorland
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
The third day of the 5 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route begins early with breakfast at Horombo Hut. You will then continue towards Kibo Hut, the final base before the summit attempt.
The vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you enter the alpine desert. The route passes through a broad, exposed area between Mawenzi and Kibo known as the Saddle.
There are two common paths leading from Horombo towards Kibo. Your guide will choose the most suitable route according to weather, trail conditions and the team’s progress.
The alpine desert is dry, open and often windy. Although the trail is not technically difficult, the increasing altitude can make walking feel more demanding. You may notice that your breathing becomes faster and that even simple movement requires more effort.
Maintaining a slow pace is especially important. Do not attempt to compete with other climbers or move faster than the pace set by your guide.
After approximately six to eight hours, you will arrive at Kibo Hut at around 4,703 metres. You will have an early meal and prepare your summit clothing and equipment before resting.
Your guide will explain the summit plan, expected weather conditions and the signs of altitude illness. You should try to sleep even though the rest period is short.
The summit attempt usually begins around midnight. All essential items—including warm layers, gloves, headlamp, water and snacks—should be organised before going to bed.
Starting elevation: Approximately 3,720 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 4,703 metres
Walking time: Approximately 6–8 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Accommodation: Kibo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Down to Horombo Hut
This is the longest and most challenging day of the Best 5 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route 2027, 2028 & 2029.
You will wake shortly before midnight, dress in your warm summit clothing and have a light meal or hot drink. The climb normally begins between midnight and 1:00 a.m.
Using your headlamp, you will follow your guide slowly across the dark volcanic slope. The trail climbs steeply towards Hans Meyer Cave and continues through loose scree.
Cold temperatures, wind, darkness and high altitude make this section difficult. Your guide will set a slow, controlled pace and monitor your condition carefully.
The first major objective is Gilman’s Point, located on the crater rim at approximately 5,685 metres. Reaching this point is a significant achievement. Depending on your health, weather conditions and the guide’s assessment, you may continue towards Uhuru Peak.
The route follows the crater rim past Stella Point before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. Uhuru Peak is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent.
If conditions allow, you will have a short time for photographs and to appreciate the early morning views. Because of the altitude and cold, it is important not to remain at the summit for too long.
You will then begin descending to Kibo Hut. The descent can be hard on the knees, and trekking poles are useful. At Kibo Hut, you will have a short rest and collect the remaining equipment before continuing to Horombo Hut.
By the time you reach Horombo, you will have completed approximately 12 to 16 hours of walking. Dinner and rest will follow.
Summit success cannot be guaranteed. The guide may turn a climber around because of altitude illness, severe fatigue, dangerous weather or another safety concern.
Starting elevation: Approximately 4,703 metres
Highest point: Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,720 metres
Walking time: Approximately 12–16 hours
Habitat: Arctic summit zone, alpine desert and moorland
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
After breakfast, the final day of your 5 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route begins with a long descent through the moorland towards Mandara Hut.
Descending to a lower elevation usually brings warmer temperatures and easier breathing. However, the downhill trail can place pressure on the knees, so you should continue walking carefully and use trekking poles where necessary.
You will stop around Mandara Hut for lunch or a short rest before continuing through the rainforest to Marangu Gate.
At the gate, you will complete the checkout formalities and say goodbye to the mountain crew. Climbers who reach Gilman’s Point or Uhuru Peak will normally receive the relevant summit certificate, subject to the applicable park procedures.
A Gowitos Safaris & Holidays representative will then transfer you to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. You can enjoy a shower, a proper meal and well-earned rest.
Starting elevation: Approximately 3,720 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 1,860 metres
Walking time: Approximately 5–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland and montane rainforest
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
Why Choose the Marangu Route?
The Marangu Route is different from Kilimanjaro’s camping routes because it uses permanent mountain huts. This makes it attractive to climbers who prefer sleeping in a sheltered structure rather than a tent.
The trail is also well established and generally straightforward to follow. However, the route’s reputation as an easy option can be misleading. Reaching the summit still requires physical fitness, determination, suitable clothing and careful altitude management.
The five-day schedule is faster than most Kilimanjaro itineraries. Climbers who are unsure about their ability to acclimatise should seriously consider adding an extra day.
Marangu Route Hut Accommodation
Accommodation during the climb is provided in shared mountain huts.
Mandara Hut
Mandara Hut is surrounded by forest and provides dormitory-style sleeping spaces. Toilet and dining facilities are shared.
Horombo Hut
Horombo Hut is located in the moorland zone and is used by both ascending and descending groups. It is the largest and busiest hut location on the route.
Kibo Hut
Kibo Hut is a basic stone structure in the alpine desert. It provides simple dormitory accommodation and serves as the base for the summit attempt.
Facilities on the mountain are basic. Climbers should not expect hotel-style rooms, private bathrooms, showers or luxury services.
Is the Five-Day Marangu Route Suitable for You?
The Best 5 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 may be suitable if you:
- Have good cardiovascular fitness
- Are comfortable walking for several consecutive days
- Prefer mountain huts to tents
- Have previous hiking experience
- Can manage a fast altitude gain
- Understand that summit success is not guaranteed
- Are prepared for cold, wind and changing weather
- Can follow safety instructions from the mountain guide
The route may be less suitable for first-time high-altitude climbers who have never experienced elevations above 3,000 metres. An additional acclimatisation day can improve comfort and give the body more time to adjust.
Physical Preparation
You do not need technical climbing skills for the Marangu Route, but you should prepare physically.
Training should begin several weeks or months before arrival. A suitable programme may include:
- Regular hill walking
- Long-distance hiking
- Stair climbing
- Cardiovascular exercise
- Leg and core strengthening
- Walking while carrying a daypack
- Consecutive training days
- Stretching and mobility exercises
Whenever possible, train in the hiking boots you intend to use on Kilimanjaro. This helps identify comfort problems before the climb.
Altitude and Acclimatisation
Altitude is the main challenge on Mount Kilimanjaro. As elevation increases, the amount of available oxygen decreases.
Common mild symptoms can include headache, reduced appetite, tiredness, disturbed sleep and nausea. Climbers must report all symptoms honestly to their guide.
Walking slowly, drinking sufficient water, eating properly and resting can support acclimatisation. However, no method can completely remove the risk of altitude illness.
A mountain guide has the authority to stop a climber from continuing when there are signs of serious illness. This decision is made to protect the climber’s safety.
Best Time to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro
The 5 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route can be attempted throughout the year, but certain months generally offer more stable weather.
January to Early March
These months often provide relatively warm conditions and clearer mornings. Snow may still be present near the summit.
June to October
This is one of the most popular climbing periods. Conditions are generally drier, but temperatures can be very cold at higher elevations.
November and December
Short rains may occur, although clear periods are also possible. The mountain can be quieter than during the busiest months.
April and May
These months normally receive heavier rainfall. Trails can be wet and visibility may be reduced, particularly in the rainforest.
Weather on Kilimanjaro remains unpredictable in every season. Climbers should be prepared for rain, strong wind, intense sunlight, freezing temperatures and snow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Marangu Route easy?
No Kilimanjaro route is easy. Marangu has a well-established trail and hut accommodation, but altitude and the fast five-day schedule make it demanding.
Do I need technical climbing experience?
No. The standard Marangu Route is a trekking route and does not normally require ropes or technical mountaineering skills. However, good fitness and proper preparation are necessary.
Does the route include an acclimatisation day?
The five-day itinerary does not include a separate acclimatisation day. Climbers who want more time at altitude should consider the six-day Marangu Route.
Can beginners climb the Marangu Route?
Fit beginners can attempt it with proper preparation, but previous hiking experience is beneficial. First-time high-altitude climbers may be more comfortable with a longer itinerary.
Are there showers in the huts?
No regular showers are available during the climb. Warm water may be provided for basic washing where practical.
Are the sleeping huts private?
No. The huts normally provide shared dormitory-style sleeping accommodation. Private rooms are generally not available.
Is reaching Uhuru Peak guaranteed?
No. Summit success depends on acclimatisation, health, fitness, weather and the guide’s safety assessment. No responsible operator can guarantee that every climber will reach the summit.
What happens if I become sick?
Inform your guide immediately. The guide will assess your condition and decide whether you can continue, rest or descend. Serious altitude illness requires immediate descent.
Can the climb be combined with a safari?
Yes. The climb can be followed by a Tanzania safari to Tarangire, Serengeti or Ngorongoro. A Zanzibar beach holiday can also be added after the mountain.
Where does the climb begin?
The mountain section begins at Marangu Gate. Transport from a hotel in Moshi or Arusha can be included in the confirmed package.
