Best 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route

Explore Tours

The 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route follows Kilimanjaro’s oldest and most established climbing trail. Marangu is the only standard route where climbers sleep in permanent mountain huts instead of tents.

Commonly called the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu passes through rainforest, heath, moorland and alpine desert before reaching Kibo Hut. The final ascent begins around midnight and leads to Gilman’s Point before continuing to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.

This six-day itinerary includes an additional acclimatisation day at Horombo Hut. Compared with the shorter five-day programme, the extra day gives climbers more time to adjust to the elevation before travelling to Kibo Hut.

Although the trail is well established, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is physically demanding. Altitude, cold temperatures, changing weather and long walking hours remain serious challenges.

Gowitos Safaris & Holidays organises the climb with licensed mountain guides, experienced porters, professional cooks, hut accommodation, meals and safety support.

6 Days Kilimanjaro Marangu Route Overview

The 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route begins at Marangu Gate and follows a rainforest trail to Mandara Hut.

The route then enters the heath and moorland zone before reaching Horombo Hut. Climbers spend two nights at Horombo, with the third day dedicated to acclimatisation.

From Horombo, you will cross the open alpine desert and the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo before reaching Kibo Hut.

The summit attempt normally begins around midnight. Climbers ascend towards Gilman’s Point and continue around the crater rim towards Uhuru Peak. The descent follows the same general route through Kibo and Horombo to Marangu Gate.

Detailed 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Your 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route begins after breakfast at your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

A representative from Gowitos Safaris & Holidays will collect you and drive to Marangu Gate. At the gate, your guide will complete the required registration and park entry procedures.

The mountain crew will organise food and porter loads while you prepare your daypack. After the formalities, you will begin walking through Kilimanjaro’s montane rainforest.

The forest is normally green and humid, with tall trees, moss, ferns and thick undergrowth. Rain is possible throughout the year, so waterproof clothing should remain accessible.

The trail is generally well established and climbs gradually. Depending on the weather and timing, you may see or hear blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys and different forest birds.

Your guide will maintain a slow and comfortable walking pace. Moving slowly helps conserve energy and allows your body to begin adjusting to the elevation.

After approximately four to five hours, you will arrive at Mandara Hut. The hut provides basic shared sleeping accommodation.

If time, weather and health permit, your guide may lead a short walk towards Maundi Crater. You will then return to Mandara for dinner and rest.

Starting elevation: Approximately 1,860 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 2,720 metres
Walking time: Approximately 4–5 hours
Habitat: Montane rainforest
Accommodation: Mandara Hut
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

After breakfast, the 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route continues through the final section of rainforest.

The vegetation gradually changes as you enter the heath and moorland zone. Trees become shorter, and the landscape opens to provide wider views.

When the sky is clear, you may see Mawenzi’s rugged peaks and the snow-covered summit of Kibo in the distance.

The trail climbs steadily through grasses, heather and distinctive high-altitude plants. Temperatures can change quickly when clouds move across the mountain.

Your guide will encourage you to walk slowly and drink water regularly. The elevation gain makes controlled pacing important.

After approximately six to eight hours, you will reach Horombo Hut. This is one of the busiest locations on the Marangu Route because it accommodates both ascending and descending climbers.

The huts provide shared dormitory-style sleeping spaces. Dining and toilet facilities are also shared.

After arrival, you will rest, eat and complete the normal health assessment.

Starting elevation: Approximately 2,720 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,720 metres
Walking time: Approximately 6–8 hours
Habitat: Heath and moorland
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: Horombo Hut Acclimatisation Day

The third day is dedicated to acclimatisation around Horombo Hut.

After breakfast, your guide will assess the group and lead a gradual walk towards Mawenzi Ridge or Zebra Rocks. The exact destination depends on weather, health and trail conditions.

Zebra Rocks is named after the dark and light mineral patterns running across its surface. The area provides a useful acclimatisation objective above Horombo.

The walk allows your body to experience a higher elevation before returning to sleep at Horombo Hut. This follows the walk-high-and-sleep-lower principle commonly used during high-altitude treks.

Move slowly and report every symptom to your guide. A headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual tiredness or loss of appetite should never be hidden.

You will return to Horombo for lunch, rest and hydration. The afternoon can be used to organise equipment and prepare for the journey to Kibo Hut.

The acclimatisation day improves the itinerary’s pace, but it does not guarantee summit success or prevent every case of altitude illness.

Starting elevation: Approximately 3,720 metres
Highest point: Depends on the acclimatisation route
Sleeping elevation: Approximately 3,720 metres
Walking time: Approximately 3–5 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

The fourth day of your 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route takes you across the high-altitude Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo.

After breakfast, you will leave Horombo and continue into increasingly dry terrain. Vegetation becomes sparse as the route enters the alpine desert.

Two common trails lead from Horombo towards Kibo. Your guide will select the most appropriate path according to weather, trail conditions and the progress of the group.

The Saddle is broad, open and exposed. Kibo rises ahead while Mawenzi’s jagged peaks remain behind you.

Although the gradient is generally manageable, the high elevation makes each step more demanding. Your guide will maintain a very slow pace to conserve energy.

After approximately six to eight hours, you will reach Kibo Hut at around 4,703 metres. Kibo is a basic stone hut used as the summit base.

You will have an early meal and prepare your summit equipment. Your guide will explain the route, departure time, expected weather and safety procedures.

Organise your headlamp, batteries, water, snacks, gloves and warm layers before resting. The summit attempt usually begins around midnight.

Starting elevation: Approximately 3,720 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 4,703 metres
Walking time: Approximately 6–8 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Accommodation: Kibo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and early dinner

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Horombo Hut

Summit day is the longest and most challenging part of the 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route.

You will wake shortly before midnight, dress in your summit clothing and have a light meal or hot drink.

The ascent begins in darkness using headlamps. Your guide will establish a slow and controlled pace across steep volcanic scree.

The trail passes Hans Meyer Cave before continuing towards the crater rim. Cold temperatures, strong wind, darkness and reduced oxygen make this section physically and mentally difficult.

The first major objective is Gilman’s Point, located at approximately 5,685 metres. Reaching Gilman’s Point is a significant achievement.

If your health, weather and energy allow, you will continue around the crater rim. The trail passes Stella Point before reaching Uhuru Peak.

Uhuru Peak stands at 5,895 metres and is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent.

You will have a short time for photographs before beginning the descent. Climbers should not remain at the summit longer than necessary because of the extreme altitude and cold.

You will descend to Kibo Hut for a short rest and meal. After collecting your remaining equipment, you will continue towards Horombo Hut.

The long descent can place considerable pressure on the knees. Trekking poles are strongly recommended.

After approximately 12 to 16 hours of walking, you will reach Horombo Hut for dinner and rest.

Reaching Uhuru Peak cannot be guaranteed. Your guide may turn you around because of altitude illness, severe exhaustion, dangerous weather or another safety concern.

Starting elevation: Approximately 4,703 metres
Highest point: Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,720 metres
Walking time: Approximately 12–16 hours
Habitat: Arctic summit zone, alpine desert and moorland
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

After breakfast, the final day of your 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route begins with a long descent through the moorland.

The trail passes Mandara Hut before continuing into the montane rainforest.

The lower section may be wet, muddy and slippery, particularly after rain. Walk carefully and use trekking poles when necessary.

As you descend, temperatures become warmer and the air contains more oxygen. You may hear forest birds and occasionally see monkeys.

At Marangu Gate, you will complete the park checkout procedures and say goodbye to the mountain crew.

Climbers who reach Gilman’s Point, Stella Point or Uhuru Peak normally receive the appropriate certificate according to the applicable park procedures.

A representative from Gowitos Safaris & Holidays will meet you at the gate and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

Starting elevation: Approximately 3,720 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 1,860 metres
Walking time: Approximately 5–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland and montane rainforest
Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Six-Day Versus Five-Day Marangu Route

Both programmes follow the same trail, but the six-day itinerary includes an additional night at Horombo Hut.

During the extra day, climbers normally complete an acclimatisation walk towards Zebra Rocks or Mawenzi Ridge before returning to Horombo.

The five-day itinerary continues directly from Horombo to Kibo, creating a faster altitude gain with less time for adjustment.

The 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route is generally the more suitable choice, particularly for climbers without previous high-altitude experience. However, the additional day cannot guarantee summit success.

Is the Marangu Route Easy?

Marangu is sometimes described as Kilimanjaro’s easiest route because it has a well-established trail and permanent huts. This description can be misleading.

Climbers still have to manage:

  • Six consecutive days of trekking
  • High altitude
  • Cold summit temperatures
  • A long summit night
  • Changing mountain weather
  • Shared hut facilities
  • A summit day lasting up to 16 hours
  • A long descent from Kibo to Horombo

No route to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro should be considered easy.

Altitude and Acclimatisation

Altitude is the main challenge during the 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route.

Reduced oxygen can affect anyone regardless of fitness, age or previous hiking experience.

Common mild symptoms may include:

  • Headache
  • Reduced appetite
  • Tiredness
  • Poor sleep
  • Mild nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Shortness of breath during physical activity

Report all symptoms honestly to your guide. Hiding symptoms can allow a manageable condition to become dangerous.

Serious altitude illness requires immediate descent. The lead guide has the authority to stop a climber from continuing when health or safety is at risk.

Walking slowly, drinking enough water, eating properly and resting can support acclimatisation but cannot remove every risk.

Physical Preparation

Begin preparing several weeks or months before your climb.

Recommended training activities include:

  • Regular hill walking
  • Long-distance hiking
  • Stair climbing
  • Cardiovascular exercise
  • Leg and core strengthening
  • Walking with a loaded daypack
  • Consecutive hiking days
  • Balance and mobility exercises

Use your planned Kilimanjaro hiking boots during training. They should be comfortable and properly broken in before arrival.

Marangu Route Hut Accommodation

Marangu is the only standard Kilimanjaro route using permanent huts throughout the climb.

Mandara Hut

Mandara Hut is located near the upper edge of the rainforest. It provides basic dormitory-style sleeping accommodation.

Horombo Hut

Horombo is the largest hut location on the route. It accommodates ascending and descending climbers and is used for the acclimatisation day.

Kibo Hut

Kibo Hut is a basic stone structure situated in the alpine desert. It serves as the base for the summit attempt.

Sleeping areas, toilets and dining facilities are shared. Private rooms, hotel-style bathrooms and regular showers are not available.

Best Time to Climb the Marangu Route

The 6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route can be climbed throughout the year.

January to Early March

These months often provide relatively warm conditions and clearer mornings. Snow may remain around the summit.

June to October

This is one of the most popular climbing periods. Conditions are generally drier, although temperatures on the upper mountain can become extremely cold.

November and December

Short rains may occur, but there can also be clear periods. The mountain may be quieter than during the main climbing season.

April and May

These are usually the wettest months. The rainforest trail can become muddy, and visibility may be reduced.

Weather on Mount Kilimanjaro remains unpredictable in every season.
