Best 6 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climbing 2027, 2028 & 2029
Explore Tours
The Best 6 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climbing 2027, 2028 & 2029 follows one of the most scenic trails to the highest point in Africa. The route begins in the rainforest on Mount Kilimanjaro’s southwestern side and climbs through heath, moorland and alpine desert before reaching the arctic summit zone.
Often called the “Whiskey Route,” Machame is known for its varied landscapes, impressive mountain views and walk-high-and-sleep-lower acclimatisation profile. Climbers cross the Shira Plateau, reach approximately 4,600 metres at Lava Tower and descend into the Barranco Valley.
The six-day itinerary is physically demanding because it combines the journey from Barranco Camp through Karanga to Barafu Camp in one day. Climbers who want additional acclimatisation time should consider the seven-day Machame itinerary, which normally includes an overnight stay at Karanga Camp.
The summit attempt begins around midnight from Barafu Camp and leads to Stella Point before continuing to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.
Gowitos Safaris & Holidays organises the expedition with licensed Kilimanjaro guides, experienced porters, professional cooks, camping equipment, meals and mountain safety support.
6 Days Machame Route Overview
The 6 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climbing programme begins at Machame Gate. The first day follows a steep rainforest trail to Machame Camp.
The route then enters the heath and moorland zone before reaching Shira 2 Camp. On the third day, you will climb towards Lava Tower and descend to Barranco Camp.
After crossing the Barranco Wall, you will continue through Karanga Valley and climb to Barafu Camp on the same day. The summit attempt takes place during the night, followed by a long descent to Mweka Camp.
The final day follows the rainforest trail from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate.

Detailed 6 Days Machame Route Itinerary
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Your Best 6 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climbing 2027, 2028 & 2029 begins after breakfast at your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
A representative from Gowitos Safaris & Holidays will collect you and drive to Machame Gate on Kilimanjaro’s southwestern side.
At the gate, your mountain guide will complete the necessary registration and park entry procedures. The crew will organise food, camping equipment and porter loads while you prepare your daypack.
After registration, you will enter the montane rainforest and begin climbing towards Machame Camp.
The forest is usually green and humid, with tall trees, moss, ferns and thick undergrowth. Rain can fall during any month, so waterproof clothing should remain accessible.
The trail climbs steadily and may become muddy and slippery after rain. Depending on weather and timing, you may see or hear blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys and different forest birds.
Your guide will establish a slow pace from the beginning. Walking slowly helps conserve energy and allows the body to begin adjusting to the increasing elevation.
After approximately five to seven hours, you will reach Machame Camp. Dinner and a routine health check will follow.
Starting elevation: Approximately 1,800 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,000 metres
Walking time: Approximately 5–7 hours
Habitat: Montane rainforest
Accommodation: Machame Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp
After breakfast, the 6 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climbing continues through the final section of forest.
The trees gradually become shorter as you enter the heath and moorland zone. The enclosed rainforest opens into a landscape of rocky ridges, heather and wide mountain views.
The trail becomes steeper as it climbs towards the Shira Plateau. On a clear day, you may see Mount Meru behind you and Kibo rising ahead.
Weather can change quickly. Strong sunlight, mist, cold wind and rain may occur during the same day, so layered clothing is useful.
The route crosses rocky ground before reaching Shira 2 Camp. Because of the elevation gain, you should maintain a controlled walking pace and drink water regularly.
After reaching camp, your guide may lead a short acclimatisation walk if health, time and weather permit. This additional walk exposes your body to a slightly higher elevation before returning to camp.
Temperatures can fall below freezing during the night, making warm clothing and a suitable sleeping bag essential.
Starting elevation: Approximately 3,000 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,850 metres
Walking time: Approximately 4–6 hours
Habitat: Heath and moorland
Accommodation: Shira 2 Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 3: Shira 2 Camp via Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
The third day of your Best 6 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climbing 2027, 2028 & 2029 is an important acclimatisation stage.
After breakfast, you will leave Shira 2 and begin a gradual climb towards Lava Tower. The terrain becomes increasingly dry as you enter the alpine desert.
Lava Tower is a large volcanic rock formation located at approximately 4,600 metres. Reaching this elevation allows your body to experience thinner air before descending to sleep lower at Barranco Camp.
Depending on weather and the group’s progress, lunch may be served near Lava Tower.
Some climbers experience temporary headaches, reduced appetite, mild nausea or unusual tiredness at this elevation. Report every symptom honestly to your guide.
After Lava Tower, the trail descends into the Barranco Valley. Giant groundsels and lobelias grow in the valley, creating one of Kilimanjaro’s most distinctive landscapes.
Barranco Camp sits beneath the famous Barranco Wall. When the sky is clear, the campsite provides beautiful views of Kibo and the southern glaciers.
Although Barranco is only slightly higher than Shira 2, you will have climbed considerably higher during the day. This follows the walk-high-and-sleep-lower acclimatisation principle.
Starting elevation: Approximately 3,850 metres
Highest point: Approximately 4,600 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,950 metres
Walking time: Approximately 6–8 hours
Habitat: Moorland and alpine desert
Accommodation: Barranco Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 4: Barranco Camp via Karanga to Barafu Camp
Day four is one of the longest stages of the 6 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climbing itinerary.
After an early breakfast, you will begin climbing the Barranco Wall. Although the wall appears very steep from camp, it does not normally require ropes or technical climbing equipment.
You will use your hands for balance in several places while following your guide’s instructions. The trail can become busy because several Kilimanjaro routes meet at Barranco.
Your guide will maintain a safe distance from other groups and identify suitable places to wait. Rushing on the wall can create unnecessary risks.
The climb to the upper section normally takes approximately one to two hours. When the sky is clear, the top provides impressive views of the southern glaciers and surrounding valleys.
The route then crosses several ridges and descends into the Karanga Valley. A final uphill section leads to Karanga Camp, where you may stop for lunch or a short rest.
Unlike the seven-day Machame itinerary, the six-day programme does not spend the night at Karanga. You will continue through the alpine desert towards Barafu Camp.
The final section is dry, rocky and exposed to wind. By the time you reach Barafu, you will already have completed a demanding day.
Your guide will provide a summit briefing covering the departure time, required clothing, expected weather and safety procedures.
Prepare your summit equipment before sleeping. Dinner will be served early because the final ascent normally begins around midnight.
Starting elevation: Approximately 3,950 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 4,673 metres
Walking time: Approximately 7–9 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Accommodation: Barafu Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and early dinner
Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp
Summit day is the longest and most challenging part of the Best 6 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climbing 2027, 2028 & 2029.
You will wake shortly before midnight, dress in your warm summit clothing and have a light meal or hot drink.
The climb begins in darkness using headlamps. Your guide will establish a slow and controlled pace over steep volcanic scree.
Cold temperatures, wind, darkness and reduced oxygen make the ascent physically and mentally difficult. Your guide will monitor each climber throughout the climb.
The first main objective is Stella Point, located on the crater rim at approximately 5,756 metres. Reaching this point is a significant achievement.
If your health, energy and weather allow, you will continue around the crater rim towards Uhuru Peak. The trail may pass areas of snow, ice and glaciers.
Uhuru Peak stands at 5,895 metres and is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent.
You will have a short time for photographs before beginning the descent. Remaining at the summit longer than necessary is unsafe because of the extreme altitude and cold.
You will return to Barafu Camp for a short rest and meal. After collecting your remaining equipment, you will continue down towards Mweka Camp.
The long descent places considerable pressure on the knees, making trekking poles especially useful.
After approximately 12 to 16 hours of walking, you will reach Mweka Camp for dinner and rest.
Summit success cannot be guaranteed. The guide may turn a climber around because of altitude illness, severe exhaustion, dangerous weather or another safety concern.
Starting elevation: Approximately 4,673 metres
Highest point: Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,100 metres
Walking time: Approximately 12–16 hours
Habitat: Arctic summit zone, alpine desert and rainforest
Accommodation: Mweka Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
After breakfast, the final day of your 6 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climbing begins with a descent through the rainforest.
The trail may be wet, muddy and slippery, especially after rain. Walk carefully and use trekking poles where necessary.
As you descend, temperatures become warmer and oxygen levels increase. The vegetation becomes denser, and you may hear forest birds or occasionally see monkeys.
At Mweka Gate, you will complete the park checkout procedures and say goodbye to the mountain crew.
Climbers who reach Stella Point or Uhuru Peak normally receive the relevant certificate according to the applicable park procedures.
A representative from Gowitos Safaris & Holidays will meet you at the gate and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
Starting elevation: Approximately 3,100 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 1,640 metres
Walking time: Approximately 3–4 hours
Habitat: Montane rainforest
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
Six-Day Versus Seven-Day Machame Route
Both itineraries follow the same general mountain trail. The principal difference is the overnight arrangement around Karanga Camp.
During the six-day route, climbers travel from Barranco through Karanga to Barafu in one day. This creates a long and demanding stage immediately before the summit attempt.
The seven-day route spends one night at Karanga Camp before continuing to Barafu. This provides additional rest and acclimatisation time.
The 6 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climbing programme may suit fit climbers with limited time. However, the seven-day itinerary is generally better paced for first-time high-altitude trekkers.
How Difficult Is the Machame Route?
Machame does not normally require technical mountaineering equipment. However, it remains a serious high-altitude trek.
Climbers must manage:
- Six consecutive days of trekking
- Rapid elevation gain
- A long fourth day
- The Barranco Wall
- Cold summit temperatures
- Changing weather
- Basic camping facilities
- A summit day lasting up to 16 hours
- A long descent to Mweka Camp
Good cardiovascular fitness, leg strength, endurance and mental preparation are important.
Altitude and Acclimatisation
Altitude is the greatest challenge during the Best 6 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climbing programme.
Reduced oxygen can affect anyone regardless of age, fitness or previous hiking experience. The shorter itinerary provides less acclimatisation time than the seven-day Machame Route.
Common mild symptoms may include:
- Headache
- Reduced appetite
- Tiredness
- Poor sleep
- Mild nausea
- Dizziness
- Shortness of breath during physical activity
Report every symptom honestly to your guide. Hiding symptoms can allow a manageable condition to become dangerous.
Severe altitude illness requires immediate descent. The lead guide has the authority to stop a climber from continuing when health or safety is at risk.
Walking slowly, drinking enough water, eating properly and resting may support acclimatisation, but they cannot eliminate every risk.
Physical Preparation
Begin preparing several weeks or months before travelling.
Recommended training activities include:
- Regular hill walking
- Long-distance hiking
- Stair climbing
- Cardiovascular exercise
- Leg and core strengthening
- Walking with a loaded daypack
- Consecutive hiking days
- Balance and mobility exercises
Train in the hiking boots you intend to use on Kilimanjaro. They should be comfortable and properly broken in before arrival.
Camping Accommodation
Accommodation is provided in mountain tents at designated campsites.
The mountain crew sets up and packs the tents. Two climbers normally share one sleeping tent unless a different arrangement is confirmed.
Public campsite toilet facilities are basic. A private portable toilet may be arranged when requested and included in the quotation.
Regular showers are not available on the mountain. Warm water is normally provided for basic washing when practical.
Best Time to Climb the Machame Route
The Best 6 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climbing 2027, 2028 & 2029 can be arranged throughout the year.
January to Early March
These months often provide relatively warm conditions and clearer mornings. Snow may remain around the summit.
June to October
This is one of the most popular climbing periods. Conditions are generally drier, although upper elevations can become extremely cold.
November and December
Short rains may occur, but clear periods are also possible. Trails can be quieter than during the busiest months.
April and May
These are normally the wettest months. The rainforest trail may become muddy, and mountain visibility can be reduced.
Weather on Mount Kilimanjaro remains unpredictable in every season.
