9 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit route

Explore Tours

The Best 9 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 follows Kilimanjaro’s longest and most gradual climbing trail. The route begins on the western side of the mountain, crosses the Shira Plateau and continues around the quiet northern slopes before approaching the summit from the east.

Its nine-day schedule allows more time for gradual altitude adjustment than shorter Kilimanjaro itineraries. The route also receives fewer climbers along its northern section, making it suitable for trekkers who appreciate remote landscapes and a less crowded mountain experience.

The climb passes through rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert and the arctic summit zone. The main objective is Uhuru Peak, which stands at 5,895 metres and is the highest point in Africa.

Gowitos Safaris & Holidays organises the climb with licensed mountain guides, porters, cooks, camping equipment, meals and safety support.

9 Days Northern Circuit Route Overview

The 9 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Route begins at Londorossi Gate before joining the early section of the Lemosho Route. Climbers walk through the rainforest to Mti Mkubwa Camp and then continue across the Shira Plateau.

After reaching Lava Tower, the trail turns north towards Moir Hut. It then follows the quieter northern side of Kilimanjaro through Buffalo Camp and Third Cave before reaching School Hut.

The summit attempt normally begins around midnight on the eighth day. Climbers ascend towards Gilman’s Point or Stella Point before continuing around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. The descent follows the Mweka Route.

The longer itinerary does not guarantee summit success, but it provides a more gradual altitude profile than many shorter routes.

Detailed 9 Days Northern Circuit Itinerary

Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Your Best 9 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 begins with breakfast at your hotel. The Gowitos Safaris & Holidays team will collect you and drive towards Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro’s western side.

At the gate, your guide will complete the park registration and climbing formalities. The crew will organise food, camping equipment and porter loads while you prepare your daypack.

You may continue by vehicle to the appropriate trailhead, depending on road and park conditions. The trek then begins through Kilimanjaro’s montane rainforest.

This section is often humid and can receive rain at any time. The trail passes beneath tall trees, moss and dense vegetation. Blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys may occasionally be observed.

You will maintain a slow, steady pace while your body begins adjusting to the increasing elevation. After approximately three to four hours of walking, you will arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp.

The crew will prepare dinner while your guide conducts a routine health check and explains the following day’s programme.

Starting elevation: Approximately 2,100–2,400 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 2,650 metres
Walking time: Approximately 3–4 hours
Habitat: Montane rainforest
Accommodation: Mti Mkubwa Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

After breakfast, the 9 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Route continues through the final section of rainforest.

The vegetation gradually changes as the trail enters the heath and moorland zone. Trees become shorter, views become wider and distinctive high-altitude plants begin appearing beside the trail.

The path climbs steadily towards the western edge of the Shira Plateau. On a clear day, you may see Kibo’s upper slopes and the surrounding plains.

Shira is the remains of one of Kilimanjaro’s older volcanic formations. Today, the broad plateau provides open views and a dramatic change from the enclosed rainforest.

You will continue slowly towards Shira 1 Camp. The slower pace is deliberate and helps your body adjust to the increasing altitude.

After arrival, you will have time to rest, eat and enjoy the surrounding scenery. Temperatures can fall quickly after sunset, so warm clothing should remain accessible.

Starting elevation: Approximately 2,650 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,610 metres
Walking time: Approximately 5–6 hours
Habitat: Heath and moorland
Accommodation: Shira 1 Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

The third day of your Best 9 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 provides a relatively gentle crossing of the Shira Plateau.

After breakfast, you will begin walking towards Shira 2 Camp. The route continues through open moorland, offering expansive views when weather conditions are clear.

The day’s shorter distance supports acclimatisation while allowing you to experience the plateau without unnecessary rushing. Your guide may include an additional acclimatisation walk after reaching camp if conditions and the group’s health permit.

You may pass giant lobelias, heathers and other plants adapted to Kilimanjaro’s high-altitude environment. As the day progresses, Kibo appears increasingly prominent ahead.

The open plateau can be exposed to sun, wind and rapidly changing weather. Keep waterproof clothing, sunscreen and warm layers in your daypack.

After arriving at Shira 2 Camp, the crew will serve a hot meal. Your guide will complete the daily health check and explain the next stage towards Lava Tower and Moir Hut.

Starting elevation: Approximately 3,610 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,850 metres
Walking time: Approximately 3–4 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Accommodation: Shira 2 Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp via Lava Tower to Moir Hut

Day four is an important acclimatisation stage on the 9 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Route.

You will leave Shira 2 after breakfast and climb through increasingly dry terrain towards Lava Tower, located at approximately 4,600 metres.

The walk to Lava Tower exposes your body to a higher elevation before you descend slightly to sleep at Moir Hut. This follows the mountaineering principle of walking high and sleeping lower, which can support acclimatisation.

Lava Tower is a large volcanic rock formation created during Kilimanjaro’s geological development. Depending on weather and the group’s progress, you may stop nearby for lunch.

After Lava Tower, the trail turns towards the quieter northern part of the mountain. You will descend towards Moir Hut Camp, situated in a sheltered valley beneath the Lent Hills.

If time and energy allow, your guide may offer an optional acclimatisation walk around the Lent Hills. Participation depends on your health, weather and the guide’s assessment.

The temperature at Moir Hut can fall below freezing at night. Warm layers and a suitable sleeping bag are essential.

Starting elevation: Approximately 3,850 metres
Highest point: Approximately 4,600 metres at Lava Tower
Ending elevation: Approximately 4,200 metres
Walking time: Approximately 6–8 hours
Habitat: Moorland and alpine desert
Accommodation: Moir Hut Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5: Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp

After breakfast, you will leave Moir Hut and climb out of the valley. The trail may include a relatively steep initial section before joining the main Northern Circuit path.

The route continues around Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes. This area is normally quieter than the southern trails used by the Machame and Lemosho routes.

On clear days, you may enjoy views towards the Kenyan plains and Amboseli region. Behind you, the western landscape stretches across the Shira Plateau.

The trail rises and falls across several ridges. Although the net elevation gain may appear small, repeated ascents and descents can make the day physically demanding.

Walking slowly and drinking sufficient water remain important. Your guide will continue observing your pace, appetite, breathing and general condition.

You will eventually arrive at Buffalo Camp, located on an exposed section of the northern slope. The camp can be windy, and temperatures drop quickly after sunset.

This remote section is one of the defining experiences of the Best 9 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Route 2027, 2028 & 2029.

Starting elevation: Approximately 4,200 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 4,020 metres
Walking time: Approximately 5–7 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Accommodation: Buffalo Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 6: Buffalo Camp to Third Cave Camp

The sixth day continues across the mountain’s quieter northern slopes.

After breakfast, you will follow a trail that crosses ridges and dry valleys. Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you remain within the high-altitude alpine environment.

The day generally involves a gradual descent towards Third Cave Camp. Sleeping slightly lower may help your body recover before the climb towards School Hut.

Views can extend across northern Tanzania and southern Kenya when the sky is clear. The landscape is open, dry and dramatically different from the rainforest experienced during the first day.

You will arrive at Third Cave Camp during the afternoon. After lunch or a hot drink, you will have time to rest.

Your guide will conduct the normal health assessment, checking for symptoms such as headache, nausea, unusual tiredness, dizziness or loss of appetite. All symptoms must be reported honestly.

Starting elevation: Approximately 4,020 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,870 metres
Walking time: Approximately 4–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Accommodation: Third Cave Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 7: Third Cave Camp to School Hut

Day seven of the 9 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Route takes you towards School Hut, the base for the final summit attempt.

The trail climbs steadily across the dry Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The landscape is open and exposed, with little vegetation.

Although the walking distance is not extremely long, the high altitude makes every step feel more demanding. Your guide will maintain a very slow pace to conserve energy.

You should drink water regularly and communicate any symptoms immediately. This is not the time to compete with other climbers or attempt to walk faster than the recommended pace.

After reaching School Hut, you will be served an early meal and receive a detailed summit briefing. The guide will explain the expected weather, clothing system, trail conditions and turnaround procedures.

Prepare your summit equipment before resting. Important items include:

  • Thermal base layers
  • Insulated jacket
  • Waterproof outer layers
  • Warm hat
  • Balaclava or neck gaiter
  • Inner and outer gloves
  • Headlamp
  • Spare batteries
  • Sunglasses
  • Water
  • Energy snacks
  • Trekking poles

You will try to sleep during the late afternoon and evening. The summit attempt usually begins around midnight.

Starting elevation: Approximately 3,870 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 4,750 metres
Walking time: Approximately 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Accommodation: School Hut
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and early dinner

Day 8: School Hut to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp

This is the longest and most demanding day of the Best 9 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Route 2027, 2028 & 2029.

You will wake shortly before midnight, dress in your summit clothing and have a light meal or hot drink. The ascent begins in darkness using headlamps.

The trail climbs steadily over loose volcanic terrain towards the crater rim. Your guide will set a slow and consistent pace while monitoring every climber.

Cold, wind, darkness and reduced oxygen make this stage difficult. Taking controlled steps and maintaining a positive attitude are essential.

Depending on the exact trail and conditions, you will reach Gilman’s Point or Stella Point on the crater rim. From there, the route continues towards Uhuru Peak.

At 5,895 metres, Uhuru Peak is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent. If weather and health conditions allow, you will have a short time for photographs before beginning the descent.

Remaining at the summit for an extended period is unsafe because of the cold and extreme altitude.

You will descend to the designated high camp for a short rest and meal before continuing down towards Mweka Camp. The long descent can place considerable pressure on the knees, making trekking poles particularly useful.

After approximately 12 to 16 hours of walking, you will reach Mweka Camp in the forest zone. Dinner and rest will follow.

Summit success cannot be guaranteed. Guides may turn climbers around because of altitude illness, dangerous weather, severe exhaustion or another safety concern.

Starting elevation: Approximately 4,750 metres
Highest point: Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,100 metres
Walking time: Approximately 12–16 hours
Habitat: Arctic summit zone, alpine desert and rainforest
Accommodation: Mweka Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 9: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

After breakfast, the final day of your 9 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Route begins with a descent through the montane rainforest.

The trail can be wet, muddy and slippery, particularly after rain. Trekking poles and careful foot placement are recommended.

As you descend, the air becomes warmer and richer in oxygen. The vegetation becomes increasingly dense, and you may once again hear birds and monkeys in the forest.

After reaching Mweka Gate, you will complete the park checkout procedures and say goodbye to the mountain crew.

Climbers who reach Stella Point, Gilman’s Point or Uhuru Peak will normally receive the relevant certificate according to park procedures.

A Gowitos Safaris & Holidays representative will meet you at the gate and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

Starting elevation: Approximately 3,100 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 1,640 metres
Walking time: Approximately 3–4 hours
Habitat: Montane rainforest
Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Why Choose the Northern Circuit Route?

The Northern Circuit is particularly suitable for climbers who want:

  • A longer Kilimanjaro itinerary
  • More time for altitude adjustment
  • Quieter mountain trails
  • Varied landscapes
  • Views from Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes
  • A gradual approach to the summit
  • An extended trekking experience
  • Eight nights on the mountain

The route requires more time and normally costs more than shorter options because of the additional park fees, food, staff and camping services.

Difficulty and Fitness Requirements

The Best 9 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 is a non-technical trek, meaning that standard climbing ropes and advanced mountaineering skills are not normally required.

However, it remains physically and mentally challenging. Climbers must manage:

  • Nine consecutive days of trekking
  • High altitude
  • Cold summit temperatures
  • Changing weather
  • Long daily walking periods
  • Basic camping conditions
  • A summit day lasting up to 16 hours
  • Uneven and sometimes slippery trails

A good level of cardiovascular fitness, leg strength and endurance is necessary.

Training for the Northern Circuit

Training should begin several weeks or months before travelling.

A suitable preparation programme may include:

  • Regular hill walking
  • Long-distance hiking
  • Stair climbing
  • Cardiovascular training
  • Leg and core exercises
  • Walking with a loaded daypack
  • Consecutive hiking days
  • Balance and mobility exercises

Whenever possible, train in the same hiking boots you will use on Kilimanjaro. Your boots should be comfortable and properly broken in before arrival.

Altitude and Acclimatisation

The Northern Circuit has a favourable altitude profile, but altitude illness remains possible on every Kilimanjaro route.

Mild symptoms may include:

  • Headache
  • Reduced appetite
  • Tiredness
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Mild nausea
  • Shortness of breath during activity

Symptoms must be reported honestly. Hiding symptoms can allow a manageable condition to become dangerous.

Severe altitude illness requires immediate descent. The lead guide has the authority to stop any climber from continuing when safety is at risk.

Walking slowly, drinking water, eating properly and resting support acclimatisation, but they do not remove every risk.

Camping Accommodation

Accommodation during the climb is provided in mountain tents at designated campsites.

The mountain crew sets up and packs the tents. Sleeping arrangements depend on the confirmed package, but tents are normally shared by two climbers.

Toilet facilities at public campsites are basic. A private portable toilet may be available when requested and included in the quotation.

There are no showers on the standard route. Warm water is normally provided for basic washing when practical.

Best Time to Climb the Northern Circuit

The 9 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Route can be climbed throughout the year, although some months normally provide more stable weather.

January to Early March

These months often provide relatively warm conditions and clearer mornings. Snow may remain around the summit.

June to October

This is one of the most popular climbing periods. Conditions are generally drier, but higher elevations can be extremely cold.

November and December

Short rains may occur, but the mountain may be quieter. Climbers should remain prepared for wet conditions.

April and May

These are normally the wettest months. Rainforest trails can become muddy, and visibility may be reduced.

Weather on Mount Kilimanjaro can change quickly during any month.
