Detailed 5-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Your professional safari guide will collect you from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi after breakfast. Following an introduction to the itinerary, you will depart for Tarangire National Park.

After completing the entrance procedures, your first game drive begins.

Tarangire is known for its ancient baobab trees, large elephant population, seasonal marshes and the Tarangire River. During the dry season, the river attracts animals from the surrounding ecosystem.

Possible wildlife sightings include:

  • African elephants
  • Lions
  • Giraffes
  • Zebras
  • Wildebeest
  • Cape buffaloes
  • Impalas
  • Waterbucks
  • Warthogs
  • Baboons

Leopards, cheetahs and African wild dogs also inhabit the greater ecosystem, although they are more difficult to find.

The park supports diverse birdlife, including hornbills, bee-eaters, lovebirds, eagles, vultures, weavers and large ground birds.

You will stop at an authorized picnic area for lunch before continuing the afternoon game drive. Later, travel to your lodge, tented camp or campsite.

Accommodation: Selected lodge, tented camp or campsite near Tarangire or Karatu
Meals: Lunch and dinner

Day 2: Tarangire to Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, travel through the Ngorongoro highlands toward Serengeti National Park.

The journey passes cultivated highlands, forest, Maasai grazing areas and open plains. Your guide will make suitable comfort and photography stops along the route.

After entering the Serengeti, you will begin an afternoon game drive.

The Central Serengeti, also called the Seronera region, contains permanent water and supports wildlife throughout the year. Its grasslands, river valleys, rocky kopjes and acacia woodland provide habitats for predators and herbivores.

You may see:

  • Lions resting near kopjes
  • Leopards hidden in trees
  • Cheetahs scanning the plains
  • Spotted hyenas searching for food
  • Elephants moving between woodland areas
  • Giraffes feeding on acacia trees
  • Zebras and wildebeest grazing together

Later, continue to your accommodation before sunset.

Accommodation: Lodge, tented camp or campsite in Serengeti National Park
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: Full-Day Serengeti Safari

Today is dedicated to exploring the Serengeti.

An early start provides a good opportunity to observe predators before the midday temperatures rise. Your guide will select the game-drive route according to recent sightings, seasonal conditions and your wildlife interests.

The Serengeti supports lions, leopards, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, gazelles, hippos and numerous bird species.

Depending on your travel dates, you may encounter part of the Great Wildebeest Migration. The herds move continuously through the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem according to rainfall and fresh grazing.

Approximate seasonal locations include:

  • December to March: Southern Serengeti and Ndutu
  • April to June: Central and western Serengeti
  • July to October: Northern Serengeti and Mara River region
  • November: Movement toward the central and southern plains

These periods are approximate. Large herd concentrations, river crossings and calving events cannot be guaranteed on a particular day.

You can return to the camp for lunch or carry a picnic meal for a full-day game drive.

An optional Hot Air Balloon Flight can be arranged in advance at an additional cost.

Accommodation: Lodge, tented camp or campsite in Serengeti National Park
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Begin with an early-morning game drive in the Serengeti.

The cooler morning hours may provide opportunities to observe active predators and grazing herbivores. Your guide will search for species that were not seen during the previous day.

After breakfast or brunch, you will begin traveling toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

An optional visit to Olduvai Gorge can be arranged at an additional cost. This archaeological area has contributed important evidence to the study of early human history.

You can also add a respectful Maasai Village experience when the schedule permits.

As you approach Ngorongoro, the landscape changes from open plains to highland terrain. You will arrive at your lodge, tented camp or campsite later in the day.

Accommodation: Lodge, tented camp or campsite near Ngorongoro
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater Safari and Return to Arusha

After an early breakfast, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for the final game drive of your 5-Day Safari Experience in Tanzania.

The crater floor contains open grassland, woodland, wetlands and a seasonal soda lake. Its permanent water and grazing areas support a high concentration of wildlife throughout the year.

Possible sightings include:

  • Lions
  • African elephants
  • Cape buffaloes
  • Black rhinoceroses
  • Zebras
  • Wildebeest
  • Hippos
  • Gazelles
  • Warthogs
  • Spotted hyenas

The Ngorongoro Crater is an important habitat for the endangered black rhinoceros. However, the animals may remain far from the roads, and sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Leopards live in the wider Ngorongoro ecosystem but are rarely seen on the open crater floor.

You will stop for a picnic lunch at an authorized site before continuing the game drive. Later, ascend the crater wall and drive back to Arusha or Moshi.

A transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport can be arranged when your flight schedule allows sufficient travel time.

Accommodation: Not included unless requested
Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Wildlife You May See

The itinerary explores several important habitats, creating opportunities to observe diverse wildlife.

Elephants

Tarangire is especially known for its elephants. Herds may be seen feeding among baobab trees, walking near the river or caring for young calves.

Lions

Lions live in all three destinations. They may rest near Serengeti kopjes, watch herbivore herds from the grasslands or move through the Ngorongoro Crater.

Leopards

Leopards are secretive and solitary. Central Serengeti’s trees and river valleys provide some opportunities to search for them.

Cheetahs

Cheetahs prefer open habitats where they can scan the plains and use their speed to hunt gazelles.

Black Rhinoceroses

Black rhinoceroses inhabit the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Their smaller population and natural movement make them difficult to locate.

Giraffes, Zebras and Wildebeest

These herbivores are found across the safari route. Zebras and wildebeest may form large mixed herds, particularly during migration periods.

Can You See the Big Five?

The 5-Day Safari Experience in Tanzania visits areas inhabited by lions, leopards, elephants, Cape buffaloes and black rhinoceroses.

However, seeing all five animals cannot be guaranteed. Elephants, buffaloes and lions are generally easier to locate. Leopards are secretive, while black rhinoceroses occur in smaller numbers.

Your guide will use experience, animal tracks, alarm calls and recent information to search for wildlife without interfering with natural behavior.

Best Time for the Safari

The itinerary operates throughout the year.

June to October

The dry season generally provides easier wildlife viewing because vegetation is less dense and animals gather around water sources.

This is a popular travel period, so accommodation should be reserved early.

November to December

Short seasonal rains refresh the landscapes. Wildlife viewing remains possible, and showers are often followed by clear periods.

January to February

These months are generally warm. The Southern Serengeti and Ndutu area may host wildebeest calving activity.

March to May

The long-rain season produces green landscapes and dramatic skies. Some roads may become muddy, while visitor numbers can be lower.
