Detailed 5-Day Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Your professional safari guide will collect you from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi after breakfast. Following a short introduction to the itinerary, you will travel toward Tarangire National Park.

After completing the entrance procedures, your first game drive begins.

Tarangire is known for its ancient baobab trees, large elephant population, seasonal wetlands and varied woodland. The Tarangire River provides an important water source, particularly during the dry season.

Animals you may encounter include:

  • African elephants
  • Lions
  • Giraffes
  • Zebras
  • Wildebeest
  • Cape buffaloes
  • Impalas
  • Waterbucks
  • Warthogs
  • Baboons

Leopards, cheetahs and African wild dogs also live within the greater Tarangire ecosystem, although sightings are less predictable.

The park is equally rewarding for birdwatchers. Hornbills, lovebirds, bee-eaters, eagles, vultures, weavers and large ground birds may be observed.

Around midday, you will stop for lunch at an authorized picnic area. Your guide will then continue through productive wildlife habitats during the afternoon.

Later, you will leave the park and travel to your lodge, tented camp or campsite.

Accommodation: Selected lodge, tented camp or campsite near Tarangire or Karatu
Meals: Lunch and dinner

Day 2: Tarangire to Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, travel through the Ngorongoro highlands toward Serengeti National Park.

The drive passes cultivated highlands, patches of forest, Maasai grazing areas and broad plains. Your guide will make suitable stops for photographs, comfort and wildlife sightings along the route.

After entering the Serengeti, you will begin an afternoon game drive.

The Central Serengeti, also known as the Seronera region, contains permanent water sources and supports resident wildlife throughout the year. Its open grasslands, acacia woodland, rivers and rocky kopjes create suitable habitats for predators and herbivores.

Possible afternoon sightings include:

  • Lions resting near kopjes
  • Leopards hidden in trees
  • Cheetahs scanning the plains
  • Spotted hyenas searching for food
  • Elephants moving through woodland
  • Giraffes feeding from acacia trees
  • Zebras and wildebeest grazing together

Later, continue to your accommodation before sunset.

Accommodation: Lodge, tented camp or campsite in Serengeti National Park
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: Full-Day Serengeti National Park Safari

Today is dedicated to exploring the Serengeti.

You can begin with an early-morning game drive when temperatures are cooler and many predators remain active. Your guide will select the route according to recent wildlife activity, seasonal conditions and your interests.

Serengeti National Park supports an impressive variety of animals, including:

  • Lions
  • Leopards
  • Cheetahs
  • Spotted hyenas
  • Elephants
  • Cape buffaloes
  • Giraffes
  • Zebras
  • Wildebeest
  • Gazelles
  • Hippos
  • Warthogs

The Central Serengeti provides good year-round wildlife viewing. Lions commonly use rocky kopjes as resting and observation points, while leopards may be found in trees along river valleys.

Depending on your travel dates, you may encounter part of the Great Wildebeest Migration. The herds move continuously according to rainfall, water and fresh grazing.

You can return to the lodge for lunch or carry a picnic meal for an extended game drive.

An optional Hot Air Balloon Flight can be arranged in advance at an additional cost.

Accommodation: Lodge, tented camp or campsite in Serengeti National Park
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Begin with another early-morning game drive in the Serengeti. This provides a final opportunity to search for species missed during the previous day.

Morning hours may reveal lions returning from nighttime activity, hyenas moving across the plains or herbivores feeding before the temperature increases.

After breakfast or brunch, you will continue the game drive while traveling toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

An optional Olduvai Gorge visit can be arranged at an additional cost. This archaeological area has provided important evidence for research into early human history.

A respectful Maasai Village experience can also be included when sufficient time is available.

The scenery changes from the open Serengeti plains to the cooler Ngorongoro highlands. You will reach your accommodation later in the day.

Accommodation: Lodge, tented camp or campsite near Ngorongoro
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater Safari and Return to Arusha

After an early breakfast, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for the final game drive of your 5-Day Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Safari.

The crater floor contains open grassland, woodland, wetlands and a seasonal soda lake. Permanent water and grazing areas support a high concentration of wildlife throughout the year.

Possible sightings include:

  • Lions
  • African elephants
  • Cape buffaloes
  • Black rhinoceroses
  • Zebras
  • Wildebeest
  • Hippos
  • Gazelles
  • Warthogs
  • Spotted hyenas

The Ngorongoro Crater is an important habitat for the endangered black rhinoceros. However, rhinoceroses may remain far from the roads, and sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Leopards inhabit the greater Ngorongoro ecosystem but are rarely seen on the open crater floor.

You will stop for a picnic lunch at an authorized site before continuing the afternoon game drive. Later, ascend the crater wall and begin the return journey to Arusha or Moshi.

A transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport can be arranged when your departure time allows sufficient travel time.

Accommodation: Not included unless requested
Meals: Breakfast and lunch

About Tarangire National Park

Tarangire provides an excellent beginning to the safari because its habitats differ from those of Serengeti and Ngorongoro.

The park is particularly famous for elephants and baobab trees. During the dry season, animals gather around the Tarangire River and remaining water sources.

During the greener months, wildlife becomes more dispersed, but the landscape is fresh and bird activity can be excellent.

Tarangire is also home to lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest and many antelope species.

About Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti is known for its expansive plains, predator population and seasonal Great Wildebeest Migration.

Its different habitats include:

  • Open grasslands
  • Acacia woodland
  • River valleys
  • Seasonal pools
  • Rocky kopjes
  • Northern woodland
  • Western river corridors

The park supports resident wildlife throughout the year, even when the largest migration herds are in another region.

Spending two nights in the Serengeti provides more time to search for predators and observe wildlife behavior than a single-night itinerary.

Understanding the Great Migration

The Great Wildebeest Migration is a continuous movement through the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem.

The herds’ approximate seasonal locations include:

December to March

Wildebeest normally gather across the Southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains. The main calving period generally occurs during this season.

April to June

Many herds move through the central and western areas as they follow fresh grazing.

July to October

Large groups may reach Northern Serengeti and the Mara River region. River crossings are possible but cannot be guaranteed.

November

Seasonal rains encourage the herds to begin moving back toward the central and southern plains.

Rainfall determines the actual timing and route. Gowitos Safaris and Holidays can adjust the Serengeti accommodation according to your travel dates.

About the Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater offers rewarding wildlife viewing within a compact and varied environment.

Its grasslands, marshes, woodland and lake support many animal and bird species. Lions, elephants, buffaloes, hippos, zebras, wildebeest, gazelles and spotted hyenas are commonly associated with the crater ecosystem.

The crater is also one of northern Tanzania’s important areas for searching for black rhinoceroses.

An early descent provides more time on the crater floor and may offer a quieter start before additional vehicles arrive.

Can You See the Big Five?

The 5-Day Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Safari visits areas inhabited by lions, leopards, elephants, Cape buffaloes and black rhinoceroses.

However, seeing all five species cannot be guaranteed.

Elephants, buffaloes and lions are often easier to find. Leopards are secretive, while black rhinoceroses occur in much smaller numbers.

Your guide will use tracks, alarm calls, professional experience and recent wildlife information to search for animals responsibly.

Best Time for the Safari

The safari can be booked throughout the year.

June to October

The dry season generally provides excellent wildlife viewing because vegetation is less dense and animals gather near water.

This is a popular travel period, so early reservations are recommended.

November to December

Short rains refresh the landscapes. Wildlife viewing remains possible, although brief showers may occur.

January to February

These months are generally warm. The Southern Serengeti and Ndutu ecosystem may host wildebeest calving activity.

March to May

The long-rain season produces green landscapes and dramatic photography conditions. Some roads may become muddy, but visitor numbers can be lower.

Is This a Private Safari?

Yes. The package can be operated privately for couples, families, solo travelers or groups.

A private safari provides:

  • Your own 4×4 safari vehicle
  • A dedicated professional guide
  • Flexible game-drive timing
  • Additional photography stops
  • More time at preferred sightings
  • Accommodation selected for your budget
  • Personalized pickup and drop-off arrangements
