Detailed 5-Day Discover Tanzania Wildlife Wonders Itinerary
Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park
Your professional safari guide will collect you from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi after breakfast. Following an itinerary briefing, you will drive toward Tarangire National Park.
After completing the entrance procedures, your first game drive begins.
Tarangire is known for its large elephant population, ancient baobab trees, seasonal wetlands and varied woodland. The Tarangire River provides an important source of water, particularly during the dry season.
Animals you may encounter include:
- African elephants
- Lions
- Giraffes
- Zebras
- Wildebeest
- Cape buffaloes
- Impalas
- Waterbucks
- Warthogs
- Baboons
Leopards, cheetahs and African wild dogs also inhabit the greater ecosystem, but their sightings are less predictable.
Tarangire is equally rewarding for birdwatchers. Possible sightings include hornbills, bee-eaters, lovebirds, weavers, eagles, vultures and large ground birds.
After a picnic lunch, you will continue exploring the park before traveling to your lodge, tented camp or campsite.
Accommodation: Selected lodge, tented camp or campsite near Tarangire or Karatu
Meals: Lunch and dinner
Day 2: Tarangire to Serengeti National Park
After breakfast, travel through the Ngorongoro highlands toward Serengeti National Park.
The journey offers views of farmland, highland forest, Maasai grazing areas and the expansive plains leading toward the Serengeti.
Your guide will make reasonable stops for photographs, comfort breaks and wildlife sightings along the route.
After entering the Serengeti, you will begin an afternoon game drive. The park’s grasslands, rocky kopjes, river valleys and acacia woodland support both resident and migratory animals.
You may see lions resting near rocky outcrops, giraffes feeding from acacia trees, elephants walking across the plains and spotted hyenas searching for food.
You will continue to your accommodation before sunset.
Accommodation: Lodge, tented camp or campsite in Serengeti National Park
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 3: Full-Day Serengeti Wildlife Safari
Today is dedicated to exploring the Serengeti.
An early start provides a good opportunity to observe predators before the midday temperatures rise. Your guide will select the day’s route according to recent wildlife activity, seasonal conditions and your interests.
Possible wildlife sightings include:
- Lions
- Leopards
- Cheetahs
- Spotted hyenas
- Elephants
- Cape buffaloes
- Giraffes
- Zebras
- Wildebeest
- Gazelles
- Hippos
- Warthogs
The Central Serengeti, also known as the Seronera region, contains permanent water and supports animals throughout the year. Leopards may be found in trees near river valleys, while lions frequently use the kopjes as resting and observation points.
Depending on your travel dates, you may encounter part of the Great Wildebeest Migration. The herds move continuously according to rainfall and fresh grazing, so their exact location cannot be guaranteed.
You can return to the camp for lunch or carry a picnic meal for an extended game drive.
An optional Hot Air Balloon Flight can be arranged in advance at an additional cost.
Accommodation: Lodge, tented camp or campsite in Serengeti National Park
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 4: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Begin with an early-morning game drive in the Serengeti. The cooler hours may provide opportunities to see predators, grazing herbivores and active birdlife.
After breakfast or brunch, you will continue exploring the Serengeti before traveling toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
An optional visit to Olduvai Gorge can be arranged at an additional cost. The archaeological area has contributed important evidence to research about early human history.
A respectful Maasai Village experience can also be added when time permits.
As you approach Ngorongoro, the scenery changes from open plains to highland landscapes. You will arrive at your lodge, camp or campsite later in the day.
Accommodation: Lodge, tented camp or campsite near Ngorongoro
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara Option
After an early breakfast, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for an extensive game drive.
The crater floor contains grassland, woodland, wetlands and a seasonal soda lake. Permanent grazing and water sources support a high concentration of wildlife.
Possible sightings include:
- Lions
- African elephants
- Cape buffaloes
- Zebras
- Wildebeest
- Hippos
- Gazelles
- Warthogs
- Spotted hyenas
- Black rhinoceroses
The Ngorongoro Crater is an important location for searching for black rhinoceroses. However, these animals may remain far from the roads, and sightings cannot be guaranteed.
You will stop for a picnic lunch at an authorized location before continuing the game drive. Later, ascend the crater wall and return to Arusha.
When Lake Manyara must be included as a full game-drive destination, the itinerary can be adjusted by reducing travel time elsewhere, using a flight from Serengeti or adding another day. A five-day road itinerary covering Tarangire, two Serengeti nights, Ngorongoro and a complete Lake Manyara game drive requires early departures and careful time management.
Accommodation: Not included unless requested
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
Alternative Day 5: Lake Manyara National Park
Travelers who prefer Lake Manyara instead of a full Ngorongoro game drive can visit the park on Day 5.
Lake Manyara lies beneath the Great Rift Valley escarpment and contains groundwater forest, acacia woodland, wetlands and lakeshore habitats.
Possible sightings include:
- Elephants
- Giraffes
- Buffaloes
- Zebras
- Hippos
- Impalas
- Waterbucks
- Baboons
- Blue monkeys
- Warthogs
The park is famous for its tree-climbing lions, but sightings remain unpredictable.
Birdlife may include pelicans, storks, herons, kingfishers, hornbills and birds of prey. Flamingo numbers vary according to water levels, feeding conditions and seasonal movement.
After the game drive and picnic lunch, return to Arusha or Moshi.
Recommended Six-Day Version
For travelers wanting complete game drives in all four destinations without rushing, we recommend extending the package to six days:
- Day 1: Tarangire National Park
- Day 2: Lake Manyara National Park
- Day 3: Drive to Serengeti
- Day 4: Full-day Serengeti safari
- Day 5: Serengeti to Ngorongoro
- Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater and return to Arusha
The five-day version remains available, but the route should be confirmed according to your priorities and preferred driving pace.
Tanzania’s Wildlife Wonders
The 5-Day Discover Tanzania Wildlife Wonders package provides access to several different ecosystems.
Tarangire’s Elephant Country
Tarangire is an important dry-season wildlife area. Elephants frequently move through the park’s woodland and river habitats.
Serengeti’s Open Plains
The Serengeti is known for its predator population, seasonal migration and expansive landscapes. Spending two nights in the park provides time for morning and afternoon game drives.
Ngorongoro Crater
The crater offers rewarding wildlife viewing within a compact area. Its grasslands and permanent water support animals throughout the year.
Lake Manyara’s Forest and Wetlands
Lake Manyara provides a strong contrast to the other destinations. Its forest, lake and wetland habitats support primates, elephants, hippos and diverse birds.
Best Time for the Safari
The safari operates throughout the year.
June to October
The dry season generally provides easier wildlife viewing because vegetation is less dense and animals gather around water sources.
This is a popular travel period, so early reservations are recommended.
November to December
Short seasonal rains refresh the landscape. Wildlife viewing remains possible, and showers are often followed by clearer conditions.
January to February
These months are generally warm and suitable for game viewing. The Southern Serengeti and Ndutu area may host wildebeest calving activity.
March to May
The long-rain season creates green scenery and may bring fewer visitors. Some roads can become muddy, and wildlife may be more dispersed.
Understanding the Great Migration
The Great Wildebeest Migration is a continuous natural movement through the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem.
Approximate seasonal locations include:
- December to March: Southern Serengeti and Ndutu
- April to June: Central and western Serengeti
- July to October: Northern Serengeti and Mara River area
- November: Herds begin moving toward the south
Rainfall determines the timing and route. River crossings, calving events and large herd concentrations cannot be guaranteed for a particular day.
The itinerary can be modified according to your travel dates and the expected migration location.

- Your own professional guide
- Flexible game-drive timing
- More time at preferred sightings
- Comfortable photography access
