The drive introduces you to northern Tanzania’s scenery, local communities and views of the surrounding highlands. After reaching your hotel, you can relax following your international journey.

Depending on your arrival time, your safari representative will meet you for a briefing. You will discuss the itinerary, accommodation, game-drive schedule and domestic flight to Zanzibar.

Accommodation: Hotel or lodge in Arusha
Meals: According to your accommodation plan

Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, your professional safari guide will collect you from the hotel and drive to Tarangire National Park.

Tarangire is recognized for its ancient baobab trees, varied habitats and large elephant population. The Tarangire River provides an important water source, particularly during the dry season when animals gather in the surrounding area.

Your game drive may reveal:

  • African elephants
  • Lions
  • Giraffes
  • Zebras
  • Wildebeest
  • Cape buffaloes
  • Impalas
  • Warthogs
  • Baboons
  • Waterbucks

Leopards, cheetahs and African wild dogs also inhabit the wider ecosystem, although they are less predictable.

Day 3: Tarangire to Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, you will travel through the Ngorongoro highlands toward Serengeti National Park.

The journey passes cultivated highlands, Maasai grazing areas and broad plains. Your guide may stop at viewpoints or whenever interesting wildlife appears along the route.

After entering the Serengeti, you will begin an afternoon game drive. The park’s grasslands, acacia woodland, river valleys and rocky kopjes support a remarkable variety of animals.

The Central Serengeti is particularly famous for its resident predators. You may see lions resting near kopjes, cheetahs scanning the plains and leopards hidden in trees.

You will continue to your lodge or tented camp before sunset.

Day 4: Full-Day Serengeti Safari

Today is dedicated to exploring the Serengeti. You can begin with an early-morning game drive when temperatures are cooler and many predators remain active.

The Serengeti supports elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, gazelles, hippos and numerous bird species. Your guide will select the route based on recent wildlife activity and your interests.

Depending on the season, you may encounter part of the Great Wildebeest Migration. The herds move continuously through the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem according to rainfall and fresh grazing. Their precise location cannot be guaranteed.

You can return to the camp for lunch or carry a picnic meal for a longer game drive. An optional Hot Air Balloon Flight may also be booked in advance at an additional cost.

After the afternoon game drive, return to your accommodation for dinner.

After lunch, you will travel toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

The landscape gradually changes as you leave the open Serengeti plains and enter the Ngorongoro highlands. Maasai communities live within parts of the conservation area alongside livestock and wildlife.

An optional Maasai Village experience can be arranged for guests interested in learning about local traditions. This activity requires an additional fee.

You will continue to your lodge or tented camp near the crater.

Tanzania Safari Experience

The mainland section visits three of Tanzania’s most important wildlife destinations.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire offers beautiful baobab landscapes and excellent elephant viewing. Its river, woodland, seasonal marshes and open plains support many animal and bird species.

Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti is known for its large predator population, expansive grasslands and seasonal wildebeest migration. Spending two nights inside or near the park provides time for morning and afternoon game drives.

Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater contains a varied range of habitats within a compact area. It offers opportunities to observe numerous animals during a single game drive.

Zanzibar Beach Experience

Zanzibar provides a relaxing contrast to the mainland safari. Its beaches, historical sites, spice farms and Swahili culture make it suitable for couples, families and private groups.

The island has several popular beach regions:

Nungwi

Nungwi is located in northern Zanzibar and offers resorts, restaurants, marine activities and attractive sunset views.

Kendwa

Kendwa is known for its broad beach and generally manageable tidal changes. It is popular with travelers seeking swimming and evening activities.

Paje

Paje lies on Zanzibar’s southeast coast. It is popular for kitesurfing, beach walks and a relaxed social atmosphere.

Jambiani

Jambiani offers a quieter village setting with a long beach and noticeable tidal changes.

Matemwe

Matemwe is suitable for travelers looking for a peaceful atmosphere and access to marine excursions around the northeastern coast.

Gowitos Safaris and Holidays will recommend a suitable location based on your budget and preferred holiday style.

Best Time for a Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Holiday

The journey can be booked throughout the year.

June to October

The dry season generally offers good wildlife viewing and sunny conditions. It is also a popular travel period, so early reservations are recommended.

November to December

Short seasonal rains refresh the landscape. Wildlife viewing remains possible, and showers are often separated by periods of sunshine.

January to February

These months are normally warm and suitable for safari and beach activities. The Southern Serengeti and Ndutu region may host the wildebeest calving season.

March to May

The long-rain period produces lush landscapes and may bring lower visitor numbers. Heavy showers can affect some roads, flights and marine activities.

Weather patterns can change, so no month is completely free from the possibility of rain.
