Detailed 8 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route Itinerary
Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Your Best 8 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 begins after breakfast at your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
A representative from Gowitos Safaris & Holidays will collect you and drive towards Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro’s western side. At the gate, your guide will complete the necessary registration and park entry procedures.
The mountain crew will organise food, camping equipment and porter loads while you prepare your daypack. Depending on the condition of the access road, you may continue by vehicle to the Lemosho trailhead.
The trek begins through Kilimanjaro’s montane rainforest. This lower section is often humid and can receive rain at any time of year.
The trail passes beneath tall trees, moss, ferns and dense undergrowth. You may hear or occasionally see blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys and different forest birds.
Your guide will establish a slow and comfortable pace. Walking slowly conserves energy and allows your body to begin adjusting to the increasing elevation.
After approximately three to four hours, you will arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp. The mountain crew will prepare dinner while your guide conducts the first routine health check.
Starting elevation: Approximately 2,100–2,400 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 2,650 metres
Walking time: Approximately 3–4 hours
Habitat: Montane rainforest
Accommodation: Mti Mkubwa Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
After breakfast, the 8 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route continues through the upper rainforest.
The vegetation gradually changes as you enter the heath and moorland zone. Trees become shorter, and the landscape opens to provide wider views.
The trail climbs steadily towards the western edge of the Shira Plateau. This section can feel demanding because of the elevation gain, so maintaining a slow pace is important.
On a clear day, you may see the summit of Kibo rising above the plateau. Behind you, views may extend across the surrounding lowlands.
Shira is the remains of one of Kilimanjaro’s older volcanic formations. Its open plateau creates a dramatic contrast with the enclosed rainforest experienced during the first day.
After reaching Shira 1 Camp, you will have time to rest, drink and enjoy the landscape. Temperatures may fall quickly after sunset, so warm clothing should remain accessible.
Starting elevation: Approximately 2,650 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,610 metres
Walking time: Approximately 5–7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest, heath and moorland
Accommodation: Shira 1 Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
The third day of your Best 8 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 crosses the Shira Plateau.
After breakfast, you will follow a relatively gentle trail through open moorland. Giant heathers, grasses and other plants adapted to high-altitude conditions grow across the plateau.
The shorter walking distance supports acclimatisation while allowing you to appreciate the scenery without unnecessary rushing.
Depending on the route selected by your guide, you may pass near Shira Cathedral or another viewpoint. Any additional excursion will depend on weather, time and the health of the group.
Sunlight can be intense across the exposed plateau, while clouds, cold wind and rain may develop quickly. Keep sunscreen, warm layers and waterproof clothing in your daypack.
After reaching Shira 2 Camp, your guide may include a short acclimatisation walk to a higher point before returning to camp for dinner.
Starting elevation: Approximately 3,610 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,850 metres
Walking time: Approximately 3–5 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Accommodation: Shira 2 Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 4: Shira 2 Camp via Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Day four is an important acclimatisation stage on the 8 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route.
You will leave Shira 2 after breakfast and climb gradually towards Lava Tower. Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you enter the alpine desert.
Lava Tower is a large volcanic rock formation situated at approximately 4,600 metres. Reaching this point exposes your body to a higher elevation before you descend to sleep lower.
Depending on weather and the group’s progress, lunch may be served close to Lava Tower. You may notice the effects of altitude, including headache, reduced appetite or unusual tiredness.
Every symptom should be communicated honestly to your guide. Hiding symptoms can make altitude illness more difficult to manage safely.
After Lava Tower, the trail descends into the Barranco Valley. Giant groundsels and lobelias appear as you enter a wetter and more sheltered environment.
Barranco Camp lies beneath the famous Barranco Wall. When the sky is clear, the camp provides impressive views of Kibo and the mountain’s southern glaciers.
Starting elevation: Approximately 3,850 metres
Highest point: Approximately 4,600 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,950 metres
Walking time: Approximately 6–8 hours
Habitat: Moorland and alpine desert
Accommodation: Barranco Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
After an early breakfast, you will begin climbing the Barranco Wall.
The wall appears steep when viewed from camp, but it does not normally require technical climbing equipment. You will use your hands for balance in several places while following the instructions of your guide.
The trail can become busy because several Kilimanjaro routes meet around Barranco. Your guide will maintain a safe distance from other groups and select appropriate places to stop.
The climb to the upper section usually takes approximately one to two hours. From the top, you may enjoy excellent views of the southern glaciers and the surrounding valleys.
The route then crosses several ridges before descending into the Karanga Valley. A final uphill section leads to Karanga Camp.
Although the overall distance is relatively short, the repeated ascents and descents make the day physically active.
The afternoon at Karanga provides additional time for rest and acclimatisation before continuing to Barafu.
Starting elevation: Approximately 3,950 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 4,035 metres
Walking time: Approximately 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Accommodation: Karanga Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
The sixth day of your Best 8 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 leads to the final summit base at Barafu Camp.
After breakfast, you will leave Karanga and climb through dry, rocky alpine terrain. Vegetation becomes extremely limited as the elevation increases.
The exposed trail can experience strong wind, intense sunlight and sudden temperature changes. You should continue walking slowly and drinking water regularly.
After passing the junction with the Mweka descent route, you will complete the final approach to Barafu Camp.
Barafu means “ice” in Swahili. The campsite is located on a rocky ridge at approximately 4,673 metres and provides limited protection from wind.
After reaching camp, you will have lunch and rest. Your guide will provide a detailed summit briefing covering the departure time, clothing, expected conditions and turnaround procedures.
Prepare your headlamp, warm layers, gloves, water and snacks before sleeping. Dinner will be served early because the summit attempt normally begins around midnight.
Starting elevation: Approximately 4,035 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 4,673 metres
Walking time: Approximately 3–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Accommodation: Barafu Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and early dinner
Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp
Summit day is the longest and most demanding part of the 8 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route.
You will wake shortly before midnight, dress in your summit clothing and have a light meal or hot drink.
The climb begins in darkness using headlamps. Your guide will lead you slowly over steep volcanic scree towards Stella Point.
Cold temperatures, wind, darkness and reduced oxygen make this section physically and mentally challenging. The guide will set a slow pace and monitor each climber throughout the ascent.
Stella Point is located on the crater rim at approximately 5,756 metres. Reaching it is a major achievement.
If your health, weather and energy allow, you will continue towards Uhuru Peak. The final section follows the crater rim and may pass areas of snow and ice.
Uhuru Peak stands at 5,895 metres and is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent.
You will have a short time for photographs before beginning the descent. Climbers should not remain at the summit longer than necessary because of the extreme altitude and low temperatures.
You will descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest and meal. After collecting your remaining equipment, you will continue to Mweka Camp.
The long descent places pressure on the knees, so trekking poles are strongly recommended.
After approximately 12 to 16 hours of walking, you will arrive at Mweka Camp for dinner and rest.
Summit success cannot be guaranteed. Your guide may turn you around because of altitude illness, dangerous weather, extreme exhaustion or another safety concern.
Starting elevation: Approximately 4,673 metres
Highest point: Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 3,100 metres
Walking time: Approximately 12–16 hours
Habitat: Arctic summit zone, alpine desert and rainforest
Accommodation: Mweka Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
After breakfast, the final day of your Best 8 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route 2027, 2028 & 2029 begins with a descent through the montane rainforest.
The path may be wet, muddy and slippery, particularly after rain. Walk carefully and use trekking poles where necessary.
As you descend, temperatures become warmer and oxygen levels increase. The forest becomes denser, and you may hear birds or occasionally see monkeys.
At Mweka Gate, you will complete the park checkout procedures and say goodbye to your mountain crew.
Climbers who reach Stella Point or Uhuru Peak normally receive the appropriate certificate according to the applicable park procedures.
A Gowitos Safaris & Holidays representative will meet you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
Starting elevation: Approximately 3,100 metres
Ending elevation: Approximately 1,640 metres
Walking time: Approximately 3–4 hours
Habitat: Montane rainforest
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
