Detailed 4-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park
Your professional safari guide will collect you from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi after breakfast. Following a short itinerary briefing, you will drive to Tarangire National Park.
After completing the entrance procedures, your first game drive begins.
Tarangire is known for its ancient baobab trees, large elephant population, seasonal marshes and river habitats. The Tarangire River provides an important source of water, particularly during the dry season.
Possible wildlife sightings include:
- African elephants
- Lions
- Giraffes
- Zebras
- Wildebeest
- Cape buffaloes
- Impalas
- Waterbucks
- Warthogs
- Baboons
Leopards, cheetahs and African wild dogs also live within the greater ecosystem, although their sightings are less predictable.
The park is also an excellent birding destination. You may encounter hornbills, bee-eaters, lovebirds, weavers, eagles, vultures and large ground birds.
Around midday, you will stop at an authorized picnic area for lunch. The game drive continues during the afternoon before you travel to your lodge, tented camp or campsite.
Accommodation: Selected lodge, tented camp or campsite near Tarangire, Karatu or Mto wa Mbu
Meals: Lunch and dinner
Day 2: Tarangire to Serengeti National Park
After breakfast, travel through the Ngorongoro highlands toward Serengeti National Park.
The journey passes cultivated highlands, Maasai grazing areas and the broad plains leading toward the Serengeti. Your guide will make reasonable stops for photography and comfort along the way.
After entering Serengeti National Park, you will begin an afternoon game drive.
The Central Serengeti, also known as the Seronera region, contains permanent water sources and supports resident wildlife throughout the year. Its grasslands, rocky kopjes, river valleys and acacia woodland provide suitable habitats for both predators and herbivores.
Possible sightings include:
- Lions resting near rocky kopjes
- Leopards hidden in trees
- Cheetahs watching gazelle herds
- Spotted hyenas searching for food
- Elephants moving through woodland
- Giraffes feeding on acacia trees
- Zebras and wildebeest grazing on the plains
Later, you will continue to your accommodation before sunset.
Accommodation: Lodge, tented camp or campsite in Serengeti National Park
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 3: Serengeti Game Drive and Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Begin with an early-morning game drive in the Serengeti.
The cooler hours provide a good opportunity to observe predators before the midday temperature rises. Your guide will use animal tracks, alarm calls and information about recent sightings to search for wildlife.
Depending on your travel dates, you may encounter part of the Great Wildebeest Migration.
The herds generally move through different areas during the year:
- December to March: Southern Serengeti and Ndutu
- April to June: Central and western Serengeti
- July to October: Northern Serengeti and Mara River region
- November: Movement toward the central and southern plains
These locations are approximate because rainfall determines where fresh grazing is available. River crossings, calving events and large herd concentrations cannot be guaranteed.
After breakfast or brunch, you will continue the game drive before traveling toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
An optional visit to Olduvai Gorge can be arranged at an additional cost. You may also add a respectful Maasai Village experience when time permits.
You will reach your lodge, tented camp or campsite near Ngorongoro later in the day.
Accommodation: Lodge, tented camp or campsite near Ngorongoro
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater Safari and Return to Arusha
After an early breakfast, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for the final game drive of your 4-Day Tanzania Safari: Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro.
The crater floor contains open grassland, woodland, wetlands and a seasonal soda lake. Its permanent water and grazing areas support a high concentration of animals throughout the year.
Possible sightings include:
- Lions
- African elephants
- Cape buffaloes
- Black rhinoceroses
- Zebras
- Wildebeest
- Hippos
- Gazelles
- Warthogs
- Spotted hyenas
The Ngorongoro Crater is an important habitat for the endangered black rhinoceros. However, rhinoceroses may remain far from the roads, and sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Leopards inhabit the wider Ngorongoro ecosystem but are rarely observed on the open crater floor.
You will stop for a picnic lunch at an authorized location before continuing the game drive. Later, ascend the crater wall and begin the return journey to Arusha or Moshi.
An airport drop-off can be arranged if your departure schedule provides sufficient travel time.
Accommodation: Not included unless requested
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
Wildlife You May See
The three destinations contain different habitats and support a wide variety of animals.
African Elephants
Tarangire is particularly known for its elephants. Herds may be seen walking near the river, feeding beneath baobab trees or caring for young calves.
Lions
Lions inhabit Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro. They may rest near rocky kopjes, watch grazing herds or shelter in shaded areas.
Leopards
Leopards are solitary and secretive. Central Serengeti’s trees and river valleys provide good habitats, but sightings remain unpredictable.
Cheetahs
Cheetahs prefer open areas where they can watch gazelles and use their speed while hunting.
Black Rhinoceroses
Black rhinoceroses inhabit the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Their low numbers and natural movement make them difficult to locate.
Giraffes, Zebras and Wildebeest
Giraffes, zebras and wildebeest are found across the safari route. Large wildebeest and zebra herds may be observed during seasonal migration periods.
Is Four Days Enough for This Safari?
Four days are enough to visit Tarangire, Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, but the itinerary includes significant driving distances.
The route is suitable for travelers comfortable with:
- Early morning departures
- Full-day game drives
- Long road journeys
- Picnic lunches
- Changing accommodation each night
Travelers wanting a slower schedule should consider adding one or two nights in Serengeti or Karatu.
A domestic flight from Serengeti can also reduce driving time.
Best Time for the Safari
The 4-Day Tanzania Safari: Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro operates throughout the year.
June to October
The dry season generally provides good wildlife viewing because vegetation is less dense and animals gather around water sources.
This is a popular travel period, so accommodation should be booked early.
November to December
Short seasonal rains refresh the landscapes. Wildlife viewing remains possible, and many areas become greener.
January to February
These months are normally warm. The Southern Serengeti and Ndutu ecosystem may host wildebeest calving activity.
March to May
The long-rain season creates green landscapes and dramatic skies. Some roads may become muddy, while visitor numbers can be lower.
Is the Safari Private?
Yes. The standard package can operate privately for couples, families, solo travelers or groups.
A private safari includes:
- Your own safari vehicle
- A dedicated professional guide
- Flexible game-drive timing
- Additional photography stops

- Accommodation selected for your budget
