Detailed Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park and Karatu
Your 3-Day Tanzania Safari Adventure begins in the morning when your professional driver-guide collects you from your hotel in Arusha. After a short safari briefing, you will leave the city and drive towards Tarangire National Park.
The journey passes through the Tanzanian countryside, small settlements and farming areas. As you approach Tarangire, the scenery becomes drier and more open. Your guide will complete the entrance formalities before you begin your first game drive.
Tarangire National Park is known for its remarkable elephant population. Family groups can often be seen feeding beneath acacia trees, crossing the road or gathering close to the Tarangire River. During the dry season, this permanent water source attracts animals from a wide surrounding area.
The park’s enormous baobab trees create one of the most distinctive safari landscapes in northern Tanzania. These ancient trees provide food, shade and shelter for different animals and birds.
Wildlife commonly seen in Tarangire includes elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, buffaloes, impalas, waterbucks and warthogs. Lions are also present, while cheetahs and leopards may be spotted with patience and good timing.
At midday, you will stop at a designated picnic area for lunch. Your afternoon game drive will explore another part of the park, following routes selected according to recent wildlife movements and road conditions.
Tarangire is also an excellent birding destination. Hornbills, eagles, kingfishers, ostriches and many other species can be found across its woodland, wetlands and riverine habitats.
In the late afternoon, you will leave the park and travel towards Karatu. On arrival, you will check into your selected lodge, tented camp or campsite for dinner and an overnight stay.
Meals: Lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Lodge, tented camp or campsite near Karatu
Day 2: Karatu to Serengeti National Park
After breakfast, the 3-Day Tanzania Safari Adventure continues towards Serengeti National Park. You will travel through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, passing the forested highlands and enjoying impressive views along the way.
Depending on the schedule and weather conditions, your guide may stop at a suitable viewpoint overlooking the Ngorongoro Crater. You will then continue through the conservation area towards the vast Serengeti ecosystem.
The landscape gradually changes as you descend from the highlands. Maasai communities can sometimes be seen grazing livestock in permitted areas, while wildlife may appear beside the road as you approach the Serengeti plains.
After completing the entrance formalities, you will begin a game drive while travelling towards the central Serengeti. This region, commonly known as Seronera, contains river valleys and permanent water sources that support wildlife throughout the year.
The Serengeti is famous for its open plains and abundant animal life. Large herds of zebras, wildebeests, gazelles and buffaloes move through the grasslands, while giraffes browse among scattered acacia trees.
Predators are one of the main attractions in the Serengeti. Lions are regularly encountered, sometimes resting in the shade or watching grazing animals from rocky outcrops. Cheetahs favour open areas where they can use their speed, while leopards are occasionally found resting in trees around river valleys.
The precise route will depend on wildlife movements, road conditions and the location of your accommodation. Your guide will use local knowledge to select productive game-viewing areas without rushing between sightings.
A picnic lunch will be served at a designated location. The game drive continues during the afternoon, when you may observe elephants, hippos, hyenas, jackals and numerous bird species.
In the evening, you will proceed to your selected camp or lodge inside or near Serengeti National Park. After checking in, you can relax, have dinner and listen to the natural sounds of the surrounding wilderness.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Lodge, tented camp or public campsite in or near Serengeti National Park
Day 3: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater and Arusha
The final day of your 3-Day Tanzania Safari Adventure begins early. After breakfast, you will leave the Serengeti and travel towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
An early departure allows you to make the most of the available game-viewing time. Animals are often active during the cooler morning hours, so wildlife may be encountered along the route out of the Serengeti.
After reaching the Ngorongoro Crater, you will descend approximately 600 metres along the winding access road to the crater floor. The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and one of Tanzania’s most celebrated wildlife destinations.
Its floor contains open grassland, woodland, freshwater pools, wetlands and a soda lake. This variety of habitats supports a high concentration of animals within a relatively compact area.
During the game drive, you may encounter zebras, wildebeests, buffaloes, gazelles, warthogs, hyenas, jackals and lions. Elephants are occasionally seen around the woodland, while hippos can often be observed in pools and wetter areas.
The crater is also one of the places where visitors may have an opportunity to see the endangered black rhinoceros. However, rhinoceros sightings and other wildlife encounters cannot be guaranteed because the animals move naturally throughout the area.
Lake Magadi attracts flamingos and other waterbirds when conditions are suitable. Your guide will explain the crater’s geology, ecosystems and the behaviour of the animals encountered during the drive.
You will stop at a designated picnic site for lunch before completing the crater game drive. In the afternoon, you will ascend to the crater rim and begin the return journey to Arusha.
Arrival in Arusha is expected during the late afternoon or evening, depending on traffic, weather and road conditions. You will be dropped off at your hotel or another agreed location within the city.
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
Accommodation: Not included
Destinations on This Safari
Tarangire National Park
Tarangire is a rewarding beginning to the 3-Day Tanzania Safari Adventure. The park covers a varied landscape of grasslands, seasonal swamps, acacia woodland and baobab trees.
The Tarangire River plays an important role during the dry season, attracting elephants, antelopes, zebras, wildebeests and predators. Wildlife is present throughout the year, although its distribution changes according to rainfall and water availability.
Compared with the wide-open Serengeti, Tarangire offers a more wooded landscape. This contrast helps make the three-day itinerary visually varied.
Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti is known worldwide for its extensive grasslands, predators and the annual movement of wildebeests and zebras. The timing and location of the Great Migration change during the year according to rainfall and grazing conditions.
Even when the main migration herds are in another part of the ecosystem, the central Serengeti supports resident wildlife throughout the year. Lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, hippos and several antelope species can often be observed.
You can learn more about the park through the official Tanzania National Parks website.
Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater provides a memorable conclusion to the 3-Day Tanzania Safari Adventure. The crater’s enclosed geography and permanent water sources support a considerable number of animals throughout the year.
Its open floor allows visitors to observe wildlife against the surrounding crater walls. Early mornings can be cold, while daytime temperatures become warmer after descending to the floor.
Accommodation Options
Gowitos Safaris & Holidays can arrange the tour according to different accommodation levels.
Camping Safari
The camping option offers a simple and adventurous experience. Guests stay at designated campsites and use shared campsite facilities where applicable.
Mid-Range Safari
The mid-range option uses comfortable lodges or permanent tented camps. Rooms or safari tents normally include proper beds, private bathrooms and dining facilities, although amenities vary between properties.
Luxury Safari
Luxury accommodation offers more spacious rooms or tents, carefully selected locations and a higher level of personal service. The specific properties will depend on availability and the approved quotation.
All accommodation names and room arrangements will be confirmed before payment. Properties may be replaced with a similar standard when the original option is unavailable.
Private and Group Safari Options
The 3-Day Tanzania Safari Adventure can be organised as a private trip or a group-joining safari.
A private safari gives your travelling party exclusive use of the vehicle and guide. It provides greater flexibility for families, couples, photographers and travellers who prefer a personal schedule.
A group-joining safari uses a shared vehicle and follows a fixed departure plan. It can reduce the cost per person, but travellers should be prepared to share the vehicle with other guests.
Group availability depends on confirmed departures, available seats and the selected accommodation category.

Best Time for a 3-Day Tanzania Safari Adventure
This safari is available throughout the year. The best travel period depends on the scenery, wildlife experience and number of visitors you prefer.
June to October
The dry season generally provides reliable wildlife viewing. Vegetation becomes thinner, and animals frequently gather near rivers and permanent water sources. Mornings around Ngorongoro can be cold, so warm clothing is important.
November to March
Short rains refresh the plains and create green landscapes. Migratory birds arrive in many areas, and the season can provide excellent photography conditions.
January to March
During suitable migration conditions, wildebeest calving takes place in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu ecosystem. Reaching the main herds depends on their location and may require itinerary adjustments.
April and May
The long rains bring lush scenery and fewer visitors. Some roads can become muddy, but the parks remain open and wildlife viewing continues.
What to Pack
Pack lightly because luggage space inside safari vehicles can be limited. Soft-sided travel bags are usually more practical than large hard-shell suitcases.
Recommended items include:
- Light and comfortable clothing
- Warm jacket for early mornings and Ngorongoro
- Comfortable closed shoes
- Sun hat and sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Insect repellent
- Personal medication
- Camera and spare batteries
- Binoculars
- Small day bag
- Passport or identification documents
- Chargers and a power bank
- Reusable water bottle where appropriate
Neutral colours such as beige, brown, green and grey are practical for game drives. Bright colours and camouflage-style clothing are best avoided.
Responsible Safari Travel
Guests should follow their driver-guide’s instructions throughout the tour. Remaining inside the vehicle, except at authorised stopping points, protects both visitors and wildlife.
Animals should never be fed, disturbed or surrounded for photographs. Noise should be kept low near sightings, and waste must be disposed of responsibly.
Gowitos Safaris & Holidays supports respectful travel that protects Tanzania’s landscapes and allows future visitors to experience healthy natural environments.
Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The 3-Day Tanzania Safari Adventure introduces visitors to three different Northern Circuit destinations and provides opportunities to see many of Tanzania’s well-known animals.
Is the itinerary rushed?
It is an active safari with some long driving periods, particularly between Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro. It is suitable for travellers who want to see several destinations in a limited amount of time.
Are the Big Five guaranteed?
No. Wildlife moves freely, and no animal sighting can be guaranteed. However, the three destinations provide opportunities to look for lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards and black rhinoceroses.
Can children join the safari?
Yes. Families can book the tour, but parents should consider whether younger children will be comfortable with the driving time. Please provide every child’s age when requesting a quotation.
Where does the safari begin and finish?
The tour normally begins and finishes in Arusha. Airport transfers and additional accommodation can be arranged separately.
Can I join the safari from Zanzibar?
Yes. You can fly from Zanzibar to Arusha or Kilimanjaro and begin the safari from there. Flight schedules should allow enough time for the planned departure.
Is the Great Migration included?
The itinerary visits the Serengeti, but seeing the main migration herds depends on their seasonal location. The migration is a natural event and does not remain in one area throughout the year.
Can dietary requirements be accommodated?
Most common dietary requirements can be handled with advance notice. Inform Gowitos Safaris & Holidays about allergies or dietary needs before confirming the booking.
Can the itinerary be customised?
A private safari can be adjusted according to your arrival schedule, accommodation preference and interests. Group-joining departures usually follow a fixed itinerary.
Is travel insurance necessary?
Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended. It should cover medical treatment, emergency evacuation, cancellation, delays and loss of personal belongings.
